Vermont is one of the most vaccinated states in the country and has served as a model for its COVID-19 response throughout the pandemic. But now, the state is experiencing its worst COVID-19 surge yet, with several factors -- including its own success -- to blame, officials said.
In Vermont, nearly 72% of residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 -- more than any other state, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. At the same time, it has the 12th-highest rate of new COVID-19 cases over the last week, state data released Tuesday shows.
Vermont has seen a "significant" increase in COVID-19 cases in the past week, Mike Pieciak, commissioner of the state's Department of Financial Regulation, said during a press briefing Tuesday.

So why are cases surging? Vermont has the highest vaccination rate in the country.
Are the kids wearing masks in school?
Nope. They went back mask free last Fall. We should be approaching Amish level herd immunity at this point. We lived life fairly normally. Basically lived like there’s a bad flu going around. People who work around food are wearing masks and a few old frail looking people wear them to the stores. Walmart makes all their employees wear them. Same with other large chain stores.
Last Spring at the height of covid 1.0, I went to a subway near the interstate. Out of half a dozen customers and 4 employees, the only one wearing a mask was the sandwich maker and that actually makes sense for them to do all the time to me. They are standing right over your food and talking after all and we know that it’s not just air that comes out when you talk, hence the phrase, Say it Don’t Spray it.
Which is misleading, since that includes those from 5 years old, which are hardly significant in terms of need for protection, while for those btwn 30 to 59 almost 80% have been fully vaxxed and over 90% of those btwn 50 and 69 and 10% of those btwn 70 and 74. AT LEAST ONE DOSE 65 and up >99% FULLY VACCINATED 98%
Yet while I cannot find the case rate per age the hospitalization rate is highest among those ages groups with the highest vaccinations rates. Which on one hand is to be expected since they are older, yet contrary to vaccination preventing infection and serious cases. A reduction perhaps versus the hypothetical "it would be worse without it" but not prevention.
Based on record high cases this past week, Governor Phil Scott issued a statement Thursday afternoon urging Vermonters to get vaccinated. He said in part, "The simple fact is, this pandemic is being driven by the unvaccinated, including 53,000 eligible adults. The three lowest vaccinated counties account for 25% of today’s cases, yet they only make up 10% of our state population. Unvaccinated Vermonters are up to 5 times as likely to contract COVID in Vermont and they account for 70-85% of our hospitalizations and ICU stays. Unvaccinated adults are directly contributing to the strain on our hospital capacity. Enough is enough, it’s time to step up and get vaccinated – something over 90% of your fellow Vermont adults have done."
However, since 98% of those 65 and up are FULLY VACCINATED and as far back as Sept 30 it was reported that 76% of September Covid-19 deaths are vax breakthroughs.
Vermont Daily Chronicle asked Health Department spokesman Ben Truman Tuesday for a vaxxed/unvaxxed breakdown of the 33 September deaths. The full text of his email appears below: “Eight of the 33 deaths in September were not vaccinated. “If I may, it’s important to consider this data in the specific context of the populations and overall vaccination rates. “For example, there were a total of 33 deaths (as of 9/24) among fully vaccinated people since January. This is a fraction of a percent of the vaccinated population – now nearly 450,000 people age 12 and older. This is an indicator that vaccines are working to protect the vast majority of Vermonters from the worst outcomes.
However, while 8 (24.24%) of the 33 deaths in September being among the not vaccinated and which were of the age groups most fully vaxxed does testify to the unvaxxed being most vulnerable, yet it is contrary to the mantra that vaccination is The Answer. In reality, obesity and other leading comorbidities usually related to it are the real drivers of premature deaths, but combating such does not see a response proportionate to that of Covid. Nor should the fit and healthy be required to be vaxxed, yet distancing from such who are infected even by a cold should be.

Missouri sounds like a great place to live.
Pre-vax Vermont saw its Covid deaths climb in the latter months of 2020 and peak in January 2021. Vermont started vaccinating right as deaths were peaking. Deaths then fell for the next 8 months as the vaccination rate increased. Does that sound like vaccines were driving deaths?
