Seattle’s downtown is now considered so dangerous that King County employees will be escorted by security guards to buses, trains and ferries as part of a new program. Private sector workers won't have such option.
The new initiative, dubbed the Walking Bus pilot program, was announced internally to King County employees Wednesday — the same day the city council, seemingly going against the wishes of Seattle voters’ rejection of the defund police movement, proposed a nearly $11 million cut from the force.
According to the King County website, the Walking Bus pilot program will take effect on Nov. 15. Starting that day, county employees will be able to "join their colleagues and a Facilities Management Division (FMD) Security Escort each evening walking to the King Street Station and the Coleman Dock from the downtown campus."
The proposal drew criticism, especially since Seattle voters last week largely rejected progressive candidates who supported defunding police during Black Lives Matter demonstrations in the summer of 2020.
The current mayor, Jenny Durkan, who did not seek reelection following criticism over her handling of protest autonomous zone dubbed CHOP/CHAZ, also slammed the city council, arguing that its previous promise to defund Seattle police by 50%, its treatment of former Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best and its previous layoff budget has led to an exodus of 325 Seattle police officers over the past two years.
She said the council had rejected multiple plans proposed by her and Seattle Police interim Chief Adrian Z. Diaz to address police hiring and retention shortfalls.
"Just yesterday, another Councilmember proposed blocking my emergency hiring proposal that has already generated a tenfold increase in applications to 911 dispatch positions in Seattle," Durkan said. "Continued cuts to SPD and underfunding the 911 center are not a plan for true public safety."

Security for me, but not for thee.
This is more like Lords and peasants than it is like a government "of the people, for the people, by the people".
Bull****. Let them live like the private sector. Govt employees are less important that the private sector anyhow. Why should people who surf porn on govt computers 6 hours a day get special protection?
If only there were a way whereby ordinary private sector workers could protect themselves...
Hmm, what could that possibly be? The Second Amendment, perhaps? Surely you can't be serious.
Defund the police makes no sense until you understand it means federal police.
If they defund the police, armed security guards should be banned. That’s real equality.
Does any rational, decent person really care about what happens to Seattle or the fools who voluntarily live and work there?
Typical liberalism, didn't think things through....
Embrace the suck.
In Seattle, the government sector of downtown is the south end, nearest the areas where homeless people congregate. Even before I retired ten years ago, it was “sketchy” waiting for a bus down there. You never knew when you’d be confronted or attacked by a homeless person or a crazy person.
FORBES -At Least 13 Cities Are Defunding Their Police Departments:
At least 13 U.S. cities have cut funding from police department budgets or decreased officer numbers with several more in the process.
Austin, Texas, is the latest city to announce a police defunding effort, with the City Council on Thursday voting unanimously to cut $150 million (roughly one third) from the police budget
Austin’s announcement closely follows the sweeping budget change approved by Seattle—a $3.5 million budget cut . The country’s two largest cities, New York and Los Angeles, approved budget cuts weeks after protests began—New York slashed $1 billion from its $5.6 billion operating budget while Los Angeles approved a $150 million budget cut from its budget. Also in California, San Francisco approved a $120 million cut to the police and sheriff’s department.

Democrats are making everyone’s families less safe except for the Dem elites with their own protection forces.
What will the Super Rich Elites, do when their blue city mayors replace their city cops with Sharia Muslims and other social workers with BLMers/Antifas?
Those Super Rich Elites will hire our unemployed and well trained former Special Ops people. Who are no longer wanted in our worthless SJW/PC military.
These former SpecOps, when hired, will handle any protection issues their super rich Elites might need 24/7. That will include special preventive action as well as ‘neutralizing’, when needed.
These former special ops in their new areas of action, will operate, react and control/end any issues without any problems from so called local cops/DA’s, mayors and the local mediots in the local media.
The blue city mayors and blue city council members will welcome these Special Ops People, while slashing their city budgets and eliminating their regular police. Their security costs will be minimized and their budgets will be balanced.
How many mayors/governors in Blue States/Cities would get rid of their police forces in a New York minute, if they were not opposed by their elites, who control them????
These former special ops guys might even protect members of Congress from Deploreables if they are needed like on 6 January, this year in our capitol building in DC.
After the cops are defunded, the bloated school budgets will be defunded by the blue cities. Teaching online will be the new standard for KOC* in blue cities. KOC* = Kids of Color.
Yeah, when we went off daylight saving time last week, it’s now getting dusky by about 4 pm, and mostly dark by 4:45. On a rainy, misty day, it’s even worse.
“f only there were a way whereby ordinary private sector workers could protect themselves...”
Certainly, I am ok with your option, but I really don’t want to spend dozens and dozens of hours in training before I would feel comfortable with that. Then there’s the expense and inconvenience. How about police that aren’t afraid to do their job and a justice system that locks criminals up for a good while so that criminals, not law abiding citizens, are afraid to walk down the street? We are paying A LOT for these “government services” anyway…
Ever since Warren v. District of Columbia, it has been established that police are under no obligation to protect you.
Private sector employees also pay taxes so they should get the same protection.
Perhaps those private sector employees work for private sector companies located down town. So....let the private sector companies pack up and move to the suburbs or elsewhere around Seattle.
That will hit the gov in the wallet big time
