Social media users wondered if the San Francisco Chronicle had published satire when the outlet asked if residents should start to "tolerate" burglaries as part of their every day life amid a recent crime surge.
San Francisco has seen an increase in shootings, assaults, shoplifting, car break-ins and more in recent months. The city’s Central District, by way of example, experienced a 753% increase in car break-ins from May 2020 to May 2021. More than 150 families were so fearful they even hired private security to protect their property.
The rate of burglaries has been particularly concerning. As of Oct. 31, San Francisco police had received reports of 810 burglaries or attempted burglaries this year in the jurisdiction of the Mission District Police Station, a 13% increase from this time last year, according to the Chronicle.
Crime has apparently become so commonplace in the city that the Chronicle asked readers if residents should start to "tolerate" burglaries.
"Residents and city leaders are searching for answers: should they tolerate burglaries as a part of city living, and focus on barricading homes? Should repeat offenders get rehabilitation services, or be incarcerated so they can’t commit more crimes?" the outlet tweeted.
The piece notes the city is in a "quandary" as it tries to pursue criminal justice reform while "debating how to manage rates of property crime that for years have been among the highest in the nation." While some residents are "appalled" by the crime, others have learned to "grudgingly accept this element of city living."
Social media users shook their heads in response, with some asking "what the hell is going on" in the Golden City.
Others suggested residents take their safety into their own hands.

Thanks but I forgot to mention another major part of the storm. With the open border, we are creating a critical mass of scofflaw society here. Many of these immigrants/invaders are escaping nations where the rule of law has become a toy of the powers-that-be. Each party that gets into office spends its time looting the treasury and rewarding their friends, until they get kicked out of office when the next party takes up where the previous left off. The problem is this pathology is being imported wholesale into this country. Law is a tool, to be disregarded if inconvenient. Why should we expect these immigrants to respect our laws when their first step into the USA is in disregard of the “inconvenient” immigration laws? Add the factor that illegals will flock together for protection and thus pool this pathology to resist assimilation and you have the ingredients for a serious challenge to the rule of law in this country now and in the coming years.
'Follow-Home' Robberies So Bad in Los Angeles, That Police Now Issue 'Cooperate and Comply' Alert.
California, leading the way to the future as always.
They voted for that crap. Now deal they have to deal with it.
Progressives have a hard time with this thing called reality.
The newspaper is saying what the left thinks. The left wants the entitled “oppressed” to waltz right in and take what is “rightfully” theirs from their “oppressors.”
It’s part of the big plan that is being implemented as we sleep. (Elimination of Western Civilization, its money being transferred to turd world countries.)
LAPD told people not to resist crime and muggings. Just relax and enjoy it.
Burglars need to make sure they hit the homes of homos in S.F., as they usually have nicer, more expensive things, since most of them have no kids.
There is a Cure, but the city administration REALLY wouldn’t like it.
“what the hell is going on” in the Golden City”
It’s only that bridge that’s Golden, not the city.
As to tolerating some degree of burglary, I have a slightly different perspective. I have a concealed pistol license.
If I feel that my life or my families life is in danger, I will shoot to live and protect my family.
Having said that taking a human life is a horrific act from my perspective. I have had my truck broken into in the middle of the night. My neighbor made a comment that that thief was lucky as I might have shot him. I told my neighbor that I would not have taken the guy's life, unless I felt that I was personally threatened, but I would have told him not to move until the police came and if he made any sudden moves, I would interpret them as possibly life threatening.
The point of this comment is that I would hope people don't go shooting car break-ins, porch pirates, or petty theft burglars. Restraining them, getting them turned over to the police is all fine and good, if you are lucky enough to know.
So to a certain extent, we all need to tolerate a little bit of burglary, petty theft. We also need to be vigilant and rely upon a properly funded police force to go after career criminals. The alternative is setting “spring gun or man traps” and killing both the guilty and the occasional innocent.
If that’s what the elites want, there should be no private security, especially armed, and no closed gates in gated communities. Then we’ll see how tolerant they are.
FORBES -At Least 13 Cities Are Defunding Their Police Departments:
At least 13 U.S. cities have cut funding from police department budgets or decreased officer numbers with several more in the process.
Austin, Texas, is the latest city to announce a police defunding effort, with the City Council on Thursday voting unanimously to cut $150 million (roughly one third) from the police budget
Austin’s announcement closely follows the sweeping budget change approved by Seattle—a $3.5 million budget cut . The country’s two largest cities, New York and LosAngeles, approved budget cuts weeks after protests began—New York slashed $1 billion from its $5.6 billion operating budget while Los Angeles approved a $150 million budget cut from its budget. Also in California, San Francisco approved a $120 million cut to the police and sheriff’s department.

Democrats are making everyone’s families less safe except for their Dem elites with their own protection forces.
What will the Super Rich Elites, do when their blue city mayors replace their city cops with Sharia Muslims and other social workers with BLMers/Antifas?
Those Super Rich Elites will hire our unemployed and well trained former Special Ops people. Who are no longer wanted in our worthless SJW/PC military.
These former SpecOps, when hired, will handle any protection issues their super rich Elites might need 24/7. That will include special preventive action as well as ‘neutralizing’, when needed.
These former special ops in their new areas of action, will operate, react and control/end any issues without any problems from so called local cops/DA’s, mayors and the local mediots in the local media.
The blue city mayors and blue city council members will welcome these Special Ops People, while slashing their city budgets and eliminating their regular police. Their security costs will be minimized and their budgets will be balanced.
How many mayors/governors in Blue States/Cities would get rid of their police forces in a New York minute, if they were not opposed by their elites, who control them????
These former special ops guys might even protect members of Congress from Deploreables if they are needed like on 6 January, this year in our capitol building in DC.
They have decided my stuff is worth risking their life for, who am I to interfear with their free choice?
So to a certain extent, we all need to tolerate a little bit of burglary, petty theft.
Nope.
We also need to be vigilant and rely upon a properly funded police force to go after career criminals.
Except your "properly funded" police are siding with the criminals. When they are not being criminals themselves.

Well, no.
Well, so much for retirement in San Jose, Costa Rica!
“I moved out of Los Angeles to Utah to escape such crap in 1982. Took a substantial pay cut.
No one has to live in SFO. I have no sympathy. GFO or STFU.”
We stopped going into SF as a family, as a when our kids were 12-14. They felt that it was dangerous. They are in their mid 50’s now.
My wife and a couple/friends still went to some plays and musicals. He was a linebacker for a Cali College, and I was in fair shape. Our vehicles were burgled in expensive parking lots. He had a foot operation and was on crutches on our last trip. The vultures knew that he was basically disabled. It was not a fun visit.
We don’t even go in for Giant games.
We got to our car and left to never go back.

I generally get called a racist, bigot, sexist, homophobe who has no idea how lovely the world is with all of it's wonderful, welcoming, peaceful law abiding people.
I shrug at that point and let them swan dive into the volcano. Some people will not listen to the voice of experience.

Going to a bank is interesting. There may be a guy with a shotgun at the front door who only lets in so many people at a time. Then there’s another guy inside with a shotgun as well.
Little corner store? Big guy at the door to let you in. Only places I saw with low defenses were shacks and hovels and graveyards.
After spending a couple of weeks there, I was kind of amazed at how open American homes are in comparison. Good thing we’re not letting in 100s of thousands of people from that part of the world.

Thanks for your reply.
We saw similar disturbing events in Mexico. We used to feel safe in their coastal cities and that went away.
So instead of flying down and hiring drivers for sight seeing touring, we started take the Mexican Cruises. That got on the spooky side too.
We stopped the cruises about 12 years ago after our ship made an unscheduled departure from a northern port in Mexico. Two port of calls were cancelled and one probably should have been on that cruise.
Excellent advice for anyone thinking about moving to another country:
I have repeatedly told people to be careful about retiring outside of the US.
