On November 11, 1918, a full century ago, an armistice took effect ending the fighting of World War I. Later, a peace treaty would be signed officially ending the war, but neither the Armistice nor the Treaty of Versailles could end the suffering generated by World War I nor could they prevent the even bigger World War (II) that would follow. Today we take a look at the costs of The Great War 100 years after the fighting (supposedly) ended.

It’s also Polish Independence Day.
And as usual the foreign press proclaims that anyone celebrating it is “Far Right”.
Vietnam-What did it buy us? Iraq/Afghan war-same question. Trump addressed it. Our hero RR said Viet Nam was a noble cause. Was he right?
Vietnam was just a battle in the larger Cold War, it basically told the Soviets they weren’t going to get the rest of the Third World without a fight.
I found out years after my mom passed away that her father had served in WW1. I do not know if she was aware of his service or not, she never mentioned him being a veteran. Mom was born in 1939 so it was well after that war ended. I do remember her telling me how German POWs on our family farm were deathly afraid of her father. He spoke their language and when he would walk out of the farm house into the yard, all of the POWs would jump up and come to attention, regardless of what they were doing. She said more often than not after he spoke to them one of the soldiers would have soiled themselves. I do remember Mom telling me no one in the family understood why or how he knew German, they just figured it was something he learned “up north”.
The YouTube Channel/series “The Great War”, began tracking the war on the 100th anniversary of its start and goes week by week revealing the entire conflict with many side episodes on the personalities, home front, and obscure battlegrounds. The crew who put it together are based in Sweeden and often take their cameras to the memorials, battle sites and museums for a deeper look into what life was like in the trenches and in the air. I can’t recommend this Channel highly enough.

Leading to the Treaty of Versailles. We all know what happened after that.
Sometimes you have to settle for the 51% of a 51%-49% judgement. The Viet Nam war broke our country in half but gave the planet time for Soviet and Maoist Marxism to exhaust their economic idiocies and let capitalism bring full industrial progress to their peoples. The Marxist left is now propelled by nothing other than momentum. The more we remind contemporary “socialists” that their roots are Marxist and that Marxism is a failure in all real terms, the faster we can knit this country back together. Throw Cambodia’s murderous Pol Pot in their faces every chance you get.
*Vietnam basically told the Soviets they weren’t going to get the rest of the Third World without a fight.* They’re investment was material-who won?
NATO-stay or leave? The French are leading the formation of a European army independent of us. They’re being brave-no war.
Korea/Japan? They’re rich. The Philippines? Corrupt. Ripe for internal or external intimidation. No one there likes the Chicoms.
Viet Nam bought us time for capitalism in China/USSR? Not worth 58k lives.
A very interesting site with lots of interesting articles - thanks for posting.
IMHO they get one thing wrong in this instance. The Armistice brought an end to the fighting on the Western Front but not everywhere. Eleven months on in 1919 we were still fighting Germans, in places like Latvia and the Baltic states, who thought that, although they may have lost the battle for France and Belgium, they hadn’t lost the war and indeed were the victors on the Eastern front entitled to keep their gains.
This is the bigger reason for the next war, not the reparations. Next time around, the Allied leaders determined that this time the Germans would KNOW they lost.
Mr Radical-thank you. Posted almost 2 hours ago with 10 responses/3 of which were mine. The historical side of our arguments seem too often lost. I would never claim to be smarter but too many here would rather read(and post) Col. Wests’ mask-slapping incident. Fence sitters would learn more our way.
*This is the bigger reason for the next war, not the reparations. Next time around, the Allied leaders determined that this time the Germans would KNOW they lost.*
True regarding Japan.
Russia is European meaning they value life in western terms. As for the Chicoms losing tens of millions of their people would, politely saying, be looked at differently. They may have to learn the hard way.
WOW that is something i didnt know about
The war was bad, but the peace was worse.
Vindictive French wanted to humiliate the Germans. That worked out well...
“Listopad” is Polish for November and means “the fall of the leaf.” Listopad is also November in Ukrainian but in Croatian it’s the name for October. You’d think that the leaves would fall later in Croatia than in Poland since it’s further south.
In the debate of who is responsible for more deaths - Hitler or Stalin - Woodrow Wilson is often overlooked.

This was a very helpful article when I was starting learning Polish, to get me to memorize the months of the year.
