A 29-year-old Catskill man is in a Syracuse burn unit after he burst into flames when Catskill police officers used a Taser to subdue him after he had doused himself with hand sanitizer, police confirmed on Friday.
Jason Jones, a celebrated athlete at Catskill High School more than a decade ago, is in an intensive care unit at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. His condition is grave, according to people briefed on the matter.
The incident unfolded last weekend when Jones, who appeared intoxicated, walked into the village police department and got into a confrontation with officers. Chief Dave Darling, a former State Police senior investigator, confirmed that officers deployed a Taser to subdue Jones, who was familiar to them from past encounters.
"I think they were afraid he was going to hurt himself, and that’s what started it," Darling said. "There are still details that we’re trying to develop."

He picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue.
We have no solid idea what caused this guy to act that way.
Maybe he had become an alcoholic or a doper, someone still looking for his place in society after high school. Back in high school, he was a star athlete.
I wonder if the cops will claim limited immunity since there is probably no precedent making it a crime to set someone on fire with a taser after they had voluntarily doused themselves with hand sanitizer?
Don’t laugh, limited immunity is easily that crazy and that bad of an idea….
Spontaneous combustion?
Knowledgeable guy. Fire is a better purifier than hand sanitizer.
“Dozens of people spontaneously combust every year. It’s just not widely reported.”
At least his hands were clean.
The warning label on most hand sanitizers clearly says “Not for use while tazering”.
DUNE reference (for you sci-fi fans out there):
taser : hand sanitizer :: lasgun : shield
Pepperridge Farms remembers!
Florida is beginning to face some competition.
I really didn’t like her, anyways
Da HECK?
Yokels have Tasers but can’t douse a fire quickly enough to keep a guy from serious burns?
Plus, alcohol burns cool; you CAN (if you are careful) put sanitizer in the palm of your hand, hold it palm up, light it, and hold the blue flame in your hand. You’ll want to snuff it after several seconds as the alcohol is consumed, but it’s not a ball of incinerating fire gonna torch your ass like gasoline would be.
There was TIME to act; LOTS of time. ESPECIALLY with the guy laid out on the floor from just being Tased.
In order for his burns to be this serious, there had to be time for the alcohol burn off, and his actual clothing to catch fire. How did the matter go that long?
It’s November, getting cold almost everywhere around the country, and nobody had a coat, or anything to smother the flames?
Does not compute.
Because they are cops, not firemen. They don’t train frequently enough on first aid to remember what to do. Quick action is generally an artifact of training.
Is he a white guy? They know they can maim and kill white people, with no community reaction.
I suspect it is possible that they could not see the blue flame until it started to ignite or melt the man’s clothing.
Y’know... that’s really a good point.
Especially outdoors, but even in a brightly-lit room, that cool blue alcohol flame would be hard to see, and this whole thing is so weird, they wouldn’t have been looking for it.
Yeah, I can see, now, how it might could get to be a minute or three before they’d notice something was really wrong.
Gives new meaning to “getting lit up.”
“Back in high school, he was a star athlete.”
So was Al Bundy, but he accepted his status in life.
