Over the past six decades, the 007 franchise has put its stamp on cinema like no other movie run of films. Arriving in the midst of the Cold War, it invented and continued to define the Hollywood action movie. There were groovy gadgets, sensational set pieces, luscious locales, sinister seductresses, venomous villains, and, of course, Bond…James Bond as the straw that stirs the drink (a vodka martini shaken not stirred, naturally).
During that time, only six men have played the British superspy, and each brought their own unique interpretation to the role—often for good, occasionally for ill. Now on the eve of the franchise’s 25th installment, Daniel Craig’s final 007 outing No Time To Die, Esquire went back and ranked the entire series from worst to best.
So sit back, grab a cocktail (you know which kind…), and see if your opinion lines up with ours.

“I think “Never say never again” was a remake of Thunderball.”
I believe the villain in Never Say Never was the son of the villain in Thunderball.
Nice.
But I’ll tell you a REAL Bond stumper:
Where can you go to watch these films these days?
Last I looked, nothing on NETFLIX, nor Amazon Prime, couldn’t rent any from RedBox...
Bacon, bacon, who’s go the bacon?
“You mean David Niven? Don’t believe Larry has ever done a Bond film. :-)
Oops. Well, I know it wasn’t David Crosby. 😜
Maybe I should start a Ringworld thread.😃”
Maybe if 007 goes furry to go undercover among the Kzinti.
There is and they are. Bonbons was too insufferably smug and Danny Craig is an emotionless thug who doesn’t resemble Fleming’s description of Bond. Dalton and Lazenby were warmer, charming, and physically closer to Fleming’s description. It’s unfortunate we only got 3 films from the two of them.
Largo was supposed to be the same character, just a rewrite of the same script. The remake was a bit more fun than the first. It also had the hands-down best female villainess in the entire franchise, Fatima Blush. Barbara Carrera has no equal.
*ping of interest, if so inclined*
www.justwatch.com had Goldfinger included as part of Fubo's subscription and rentable from Amazon, YouTube, Google, Redbox, Apple, Vudu, DirectTV and Microsoft.
I remember standing in a huge line at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood to see “Dr. No” the first James Bond movie. We were very excited as we had been reading all the books. Sean Connery was the best.
The only Bond book I’ve read is the first one Casino Royale. In it, James Bond is a valuable veteran agent but not approaching anything super hero-like. Our ballistic snobs made fun of his usual mouse gun in the Bond movies which was a Walther 32 acp (7.65mm in Europe). But in Casino Royale, he wore a Beretta 25 acp (6.35mm in Europe) when in a tuxedo. One can’t conceal a bulky weapon when a man wants to look properly tailor-fitted in a tux.
Thanks. I’ll look again.
Octopussy and a View to a Kills were awful. You Only Live Twice should be up near the top IMO. Thuderball is still one of the best of the lot.
Had lunch one day with a customer who invited Richard Kiel. Had the largest hands of any human. Truly a nice man who adored his wife and kids. My wife used to ride with Barbara Bach...not a nice woman.
The Sean Connery Bond films should occupy ALL the top rankings. Period. Case closed. After that, who cares?
Esquire doesn’t like “You Only Live Twice” because Sean Connery “goes yellow face.” Their words, not mine. To the Marxist ideologues at Esquire, it all comes down to race.
http://pluto.tv seems to have them on semi-regularly.
With all the time we spend watching, writing, and arguing over James Bond movies...we could do our own spying and find out who is pulling Bidens strings.
However, I digress...
Best jb movie...Goldfinger...no 2...Russia with love...the rest are ok....until ‘bout halfway through the Roger Moore ones...then a free for all
Hottest lady...Dianela Bianchi( Tatiana Romanova)...russia...no.2.Luciana Paluzzi (Fiona Volpe)..Thunderball...the rest were very nicel also...so I ain’t complainin’
IMHO.
Never Say Never Again was an unofficial Bond film. The same for the original Casino Royal.
My points:
Top five bond girls:
Daniela Bianchi
Ursula Andress
Mie Hama
Léa Seydoux
Jane Seymour
(In no particular order. I just wouldn’t kick them out of bed if they brought me a screwed up Vesper martini)
SPEAKING OF MARTINIS....
Ian Fleming invented the Vesper martini. Any James Bond connoisseur on this thread knows the ingredients.
My modification:
3 ounces of Bombay Sapphire
1 ounce of Crystal Head vodka
.5 ounce of Cocci Americano
Peel the lemon in a long, thin strip and roll it tight so it looks like a yellow rose that expands when the drink is poured into the glass.
Trivia question:
What is the only James Bond movie where he sings?
Problem with the strings thing: None of us have licenses to kill. Our side tends to obey the law.
Also:
Dianela Bianchi
Ditto!
