THE GREAT REBELLION: Important News from the Naval Expedition; Descent Upon the Coast of South Carolina; Its Destination Bull’s Bay or Beaufort (11/6/1861)
New York Times archives – Times Machine ^ | 11/6/1861

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, Nov. 5.

The news from the fleet and the hopeful position of affairs about Gen. ROSECRANS' command have excited a general rejoicing in the city, and all are anxiously waiting to hear of the success of both.

Gen. MCCLELLAN is now compelled, in consequence of his enlarged command, to remain more in the city. He has not crossed the river since the departure of Gen. SCOTT, but he is constantly engaged in attending to his duties here.

Major-Gen. HALLOCK arrived in the city this morning, and is now stopping at Willard's. He reported himself early to Gen. MCCLELLAN, and he was cordially welcomed. At a late hour he was accompanied by Gen. MCCLELLAN to the Executive mansion, where he was introduced to the President and members of the Cabinet, and the same welcome was extended to him. It is not yet been decided to what department Gen. HALLOCK will be assigned. He is not second in command, as is stated by some of the New-York journals. Gen. FREMONT ranks him -- Gen. HALLOCK being the third of the Major-Generals created by the last Congress.

The Government has so perfected its plans that no fears are felt of any uprising in Maryland on the occasion of the election to-morrow.

Under a most singular misapprehension of the facts, the Administration has caused a cessation of the proceedings of Provost-Judge FREESE, of Alexandria, to secure the payment of Northern merchants for claims against the estates of rebel debtors. The following is an order of Maj.-Gen. MCCLELLAN to the military Governor of Alexandria:

HEADQUARTERS, ARMY OF POTOMAC,

WASHINGTON, Nov. 4, 1861.

Brig.-Gen. MONTGOMERY -- Sir: The General commanding has received from the War Department a communication, of which I forward herewith a copy, touching certain alleged proceedings of the Provost-Marshal of

Interesting reading about Beaufort SC in today’s post. We spent Summer of 2020 in Beaufort in a marina (we live on a sailboat and travel some). While there, I read some of the Official Records on that area and it was quite active in blocking up Savannah and Charleston.

It was also interesting when we went through Port Royal sound in that we were passing over the same waters as Dupont’s navy when they took out the Confederate forts on St. Helena and Hilton Head.

Thanks for posting!

Good afternoon professor.

Reference the Times writer regarding the current situation in Florida.

Ft. Jefferson was a POW camp (Dry Tortugus). It could not command the Straits of Florida.

Ft. Pickens is now in VA.

Anyway, the Federal government was still at war with the Seminole tribes. (IIRC, no peace treaty has been signed).

Just saying the word, “conquered,” was, let me say to the Times reporter...you keep using that word...

Gen. MCCLELLAN is now compelled, in consequence of his enlarged command, to remain more in the city.

The General is deeply saddened, but, hey, a General has to do what a General has to do. Prolly have to live at the Willard, too, darn.
