FIGHTING IN WESTERN VIRGINIA.

The Government received a dispatch to-day from the West, stating that on Friday last a battle was going on at Gauley Bridge, but the communication was interrupted before any particulars were obtained. Some doubt was cast over the authenticity of the news by the fact that a steamer leaving Charleston last Sunday, carried out no confirmation of the story.

The city is still on the qui vive to hear from the Naval Expedition. No intelligence has yet been received at the Navy Department, and conjectures as to its destination and safety are in the minds of all except the knowing ones, who are annoyingly reticent. The same anxiety is felt in the camps across the river, and all thoughts of a movement forward have subsided in the wish to know where the fleet has landed.

TRYING OUR BATTERIES ON THE LOWER POTOMAC.

The steamer Resolute came up to the Navy-yard last night.

One of the batteries on the Maryland shore has been completed and the range of some of our 32-pounder Parrott guns was tried on the rebel steamer George Page, yesterday afternoon.

Three shots struck her, with what effect is not known, as the water being very high, she was enabled to run up Quantico Creek out of range.

The steamship Harriet Laue, arrived this evening, brings the latest news from the Lower Potomac. A number of river craft ran the blockade during the storm. Our gunners on the Maryland shore were firing at the rebels occasionally, to test the range of their pieces.

Owing to the rise in the Potomac in consequence of the recent storm, the Long Bridge was impassable to-day. The Georgetown Ferry stopped running, and but one boat could run on the Alexandria route.
