‘Rust’ Film Armorer Says Someone May Have Put Bullet in Gun

(AP) — The woman in charge of weapons on the movie set where actor Alec Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins said Wednesday night that she had inspected the gun Baldwin shot but doesn’t know how a live bullet ended up inside.

“Who put those in there and why is the central question,” Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer for the movie “Rust” said in a statement issued by one of her lawyers, Jason Bowles of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“Hannah kept guns locked up, including throughout lunch on the day in question (Oct. 21), and she instructed her department to watch the cart containing the guns when she was pulled away for her other duties or on a lunch break.”

The statement goes on to say that “Hannah did everything in her power to ensure a safe set. She inspected the rounds that she loaded into the firearms that day. She always inspected the rounds.”

The statement adds that she inspected the rounds before handing the firearm to assistant director David Halls “by spinning the cylinder and showing him all of the rounds and then handing him the firearm.”

“No one could have anticipated or thought that someone would introduce live rounds into this set,” Gutierrez Reed’s statement said.

The statement also noted that “she did firearms training for the actors as well as Mr. Baldwin, she fought for more training days and she regularly emphasized to never point a firearm at a person.”

On Oct. 29, attorneys for Hannah Gutierrez-Reed said she doesn’t know where the live rounds found there came from and blamed producers for unsafe working conditions.

Hindsight here but wouldn’t it make sense to load it just before it’s to be used and not hours beforehand?

I can be a bit pedantic and a grammar geek, but I like to see proper terminology used. A “bullet”, a “round”, a “cartridge”, a “clip”, “magazine”, I kind of take these things to mean what they mean, but then again, I’m only familiar with two genders.

When I think of a “bullet” in a firearm, I imagine a lead slug just wobbling around in the chamber. I like to be specific and use “cartridge” or “round” or “shell”, or “spent shell casing”, or “spent bullet”, so my audience knows what objects I’m referring to.

Sorry for the rant.

Scripts usually give instruction along with the rhetoric.

Was he supposed to point it at the camera or have we been supposing that.

That's a ridiculous statement. Her job is in the loading and handling".

How did it get to be Halls job to hand it off?

No way, it crawled in there on it’s own. Guns and ammo are like that, they just DO things unattended.

That was my first though, too.

But the strangest thing in my mind is that fact that RUST is about an accidental killing...with a gun. AND Baldwin co wrote it and wouldn't be surprised if he selected the weapon he would use.

After you clear a weapon, and absolutely know for a fact that it is unloaded, aim it in the safest possible direction (perhaps up) and pull the trigger. If you hear a *click* but no discharge, then and only then, you still have to f***ing treat it as if it is loaded.

Sounds like she is admitting it was premeditated murder. Now it’s just process of elimination. Better flee the country, Alec.

Saw something earlier somewhere that speculated that a Trumper put a live round in there.

The insanity never ends

I heard something about COVID restrictions on how many people could be in the building they were filming in.

Her lawyer is a damnfool, making all these public statements before he even knows all the evidence the police are gathering. The only bigger fool in all this is Barwin.

I don’t know the particulars of the dummy rounds that they were using. For training purposes, I’ll either use a spent case with the primer removed, and with a hole drilled through case, or some of the bright orange plastic ones. My understanding is that the prop houses have options with a hole drilled on one side, and that they add a BB behind the bullet so there’s a rattle if you shake it. (Good idea, I think i’ll steal it).

I don’t know how they address the primer. If you know, I’d be interested to find out.

She claims she loaded six dummy cartridges in it. Someone may have done something with it afterwards

She just admitted to total incompetence in her job, to the point of criminal negligence.

She was supposed to personally unload and clear the weapon immediately before any rehearsal.

She was supposed to personally load the weapon with blank cartridges immediately before filming.

She was supposed to personally unload and clear the weapon immediately after filming.

Only the Armorer or an authorized Weapons Handler is allowed to pass a weapon to an Actor. Only the Armorer or Weapons Handler is supposed to retrieve a weapon from a set.

Weapons and ammunition must be stored in secure locations and are never to be left unattended when out of those locations.

The Assistant Director was not supposed to touch a firearm for any reason.

I read somewhere that during breaks the crew would take the guns out load them and practice shooting with live ammo.
It might be that when they were finished not all were spent.
And put them back.

Hannah did everything in her power to ensure a safe set.

Not exactly, since she allowed the assistant director to hand Baldwin the gun. Total break of protocol.
