The Most Reluctant Convert: The Untold Story of C.S. Lewis
Deadline ^ | November 4, 2021 | Jill Goldsmith

Posted on 11/04/2021 9:43:54 AM PDT by sphinx

"FPA founder and artistic director Max McLean stars as middle-aged Lewis recalling events that began his journey from vigorous debunker of Christianity to one of the most influential Christian writers of the past century. The film is based on the play C.S. Lewis on Stage: The Most Reluctant Convert that premiered in 2016. Play and film are both taken from Lewis’ memoir, Surprised by Joy, which is licensed from the C.S. Lewis Company.

“When we began working on our distribution of the film, we had a handful of theatres, mostly in major markets, with one showing on one day on November 3,” said McLean. “I am grateful to the tens of thousands of people who came out to fill theaters in almost every major city throughout the country.”

Reminds me of my off-Broadway one-man play, La Cochina. I never did find that script again after I moved!

Those movers have not heard the last from me!

Actually, better to get a strong reaction than a luke-warm one.

Just pray.

Probably a lot of pain and pride and self-will underlying his reaction.

When asked for a book that explains what an intelligent, well-read, and well educated Christian believes, Mere Christianity is a really good place to start.

My friends name , ironically, is Paul if anyone would be so kind as to pray he goes and sees this movie)

Now if they would just make a film out of his science fiction trilogy

Out of the silent planet
Peralandra
That hideous strength

( that last one would be quite comparable to our society/ government/ academia today,,, a true horror movie)

“The Screwtape Letters” .........

A singularly helpful book....explains so much.....redirects one’s thinking brilliantly.

His 1942 Christian apologetic novel dedicated to his friend J. R. R. Tolkien.....a Catholic. It is written in a satirical, epistolary style and while it is fictional in format, the plot and characters are used to address Christian theological issues, primarily those to do with temptation and resistance to it.

We saw it last night. Did not like the format, it was a big fat dude telling you what to think for most of the movie. The conversion aspect of the movie was not covered very well. His friend, J.R. Tolkien was Catholic, but very little of their “all-night discussions” about Faith in Jesus Christ was shown. Overall we just did not like how the story was told.

There were two movie versions of “Shadowlands,” the earlier one (1980s) starring Joss Ackland and the second one (1990s) with Anthony Hopkins. The Hopkins high-octane version got much more publicity, of course, but I preferred Ackland’s more subdued portrayal. It seemed truer to Lewis’s character.

AND THIS........

The Screwtape Letters was dedicated to CS’s friend ...the renowned. J. R. R. Tolkien.....a Catholic.

Tolkien had hoped CS would convert to Catholicism.....however many of The Screwtape Letters religious allusions are considered to be Catholic, or High Anglican, in origin.

Never been a fan of the horror flick genre unless the movie is so badly done as to be comedic.

I only saw the Hopkins version with Debra Winger and never knew there was another. Will have to check it out. Thanks for the info.

Watch Cabin in the Woods. It's a parody of the whole genre and it's beautifully done, including a hilarious running gag on why characters in horror films make such systematically bad decisions. ("Let's split up ....")

The GIECO ‘good decisions’ commercial alerted me to that trait in horror flicks.

“Let’s hide in the attic. No in the basement, Why don’t we get in the running car? Let’s hide behind the chainsaws....Let’s head for the cemetery!”

There was a stage performance of this some time back I just finished watching with a similar title.

Lewis is most famous for his Screw-tape Letters. That publication brought him worldwide notoriety. Lewis is One of my favorite authors....
