WHO backs India's Covaxin for emergency Covid use: A traditional inactivated virus-based COVID-19 vaccine

The World Health Organization (WHO) has granted approval for emergency use to India's government-backed Covid-19 vaccine, Covaxin.

The vaccine was approved in India in January while the third phase of clinical trials was still under way, sparking some concern and criticism.

Bharat Biotech, which makes the vaccine, has since published data suggesting 78% efficacy.

The WHO said in a tweet it believed the benefits far outweighed the risks.

Some experts had pointed to a fast-track approval and incomplete data, but the firm's chairman, Dr Krishna Ella, said the vaccine was "200% safe".

The WHO's expert panel, which authorises emergency approvals, had asked for more data last month while examining the application Bharat Biotech had filed in July.

In its approval it said:

The vaccine was recommended for use in two doses, with a dose interval of four weeks, in all age groups 18 and above Covaxin had 78% efficacy against Covid 19 of any severity, 14 or more days after the second dose, and is extremely suitable for low- and middle-income countries due to easy storage requirements Available data on vaccination of pregnant women with the vaccine are insufficient to assess vaccine safety or efficacy in pregnancy The approval will also be a relief to the tens of millions of Indians who have received the jab - India has administered more than 105 million Covaxin doses so far - and a fillip for Bharat Biotech.

Few countries have recognised Covaxin and India hopes the WHO approval will change that.

How that will play out on travel restrictions for vaccinated Indians remains unclear.

Quick explanation behind the technology of India’s Covaxin:

As an inactivated vaccine, Covaxin uses a more traditional technology that is similar to the inactivated polio vaccine. Initially, a sample of SARS-CoV-2 was isolated by India’s National Institute of Virology and used to grow large quantities of the virus using vero cells.

From then on, the viruses are soaked in beta-propiolactone, which deactivates them by binding to their genes, while leaving other viral particles intact. The resulting inactivated viruses are then mixed with the aluminium-based adjuvant Alhydroxiquim-II.

The vaccine candidate is produced with Bharat Biotech’s in-house vero cell manufacturing platform that has the capacity to deliver about 300 million doses.

Ocugen has entered into a partnership with Bharat Biotech to co-develop and exclusively commercialise Covaxin in the US market

This is great but I can’t trust American doctors any more to not sneak in some kind of mRNA. I don’t trust any shot any more thanks to a blizzard of lies from American doctors.

For folks who want a vaxx, choice is good.

But I still think mass vaxxing for CoupFlu during the outbreak is nuts.

There is also no evidence to support other recent claims made regarding the use of aborted foetal tissue and the like in the jabs.

I was concerned about human fetal cells. I should have been more specific.

About.Damn.Time.

We knew a real vaccine would eventually arrive (hence the full-court press to guilt/force/coerce people into taking the Faucian mRNA jabs).

But still ... is vaccinating against a coronavirus ever warranted? It's a bad chest cold. I've had it; it sucks bad, especially with a history of bad asthma. But with an advocate able to "do for you" while you're weak, and with the release of therapeutics that clearly do provide incredible benefit, there's just no point to yet another broad vaccination program outside the extreme risk groups.

That's my $.02 from someone who has been through it and who was the advocate for a 78 year old widower who went through it as well. Your mileage may vary, but I am totally enjoying my jab-free robust naturally acquired immunity.

Different technology.

Novavax uses a protein based substavk technology for its vaccine. The Hepatitis and Titanus vaccines use this type of technology.

Covaxin uses an inactivated virus similar to the polio vaccine.
