Ado Campeol, the man known as the 'father of tiramisu,' has died

Ado Campeol, the famed owner of the Italian restaurant where tiramisu is widely thought to have been invented, has died. He was 93.

Luca Zaia, the president of Italy's Veneto region, where Campeol's former restaurant was located in the city of Treviso, announced the news in a Facebook post.

"I extend to all the family members my deepest condolences," Zaia said in a post translated from Italian.

Campeol's restaurant, Le Beccherie, has long been considered the birthplace of tiramisu, the sweet Italian dessert that's become a global favorite at the dinner table.

Roughly translated as "pick me up," tiramisu typically consists of ladyfingers soaked in coffee separated by layers of an airy cream made by whipping together egg yolks, sugar and mascarpone cheese. The top is sprinkled with cocoa powder, and some variations include the addition of liquor such as rum or Marsala wine.

Although Campeol has been called the "father of tiramisu," it was actually his wife, Alba Campeol, and one of the restaurant's chefs that apparently invented it.

According to the BBC, Alba Campeol and chef Roberto Linguanotto came up with the idea for the dessert after Linguanotto accidentally dropped mascarpone in a bowl of eggs and sugar. He liked how it tasted and told Alba Campeol. The two then added coffee-soaked ladyfingers and concocted what came to be known as tiramisu, which first appeared on the restaurant's menu in 1972.

Perhaps now his wife will get the credit she deserves.

Tiramisu is a coffee-flavored Italian dessert. It is made of ladyfingers dipped in coffee, layered with a whipped mixture of eggs, sugar, and mascarpone, a soft Italian acid-set cream cheese, flavored with cocoa.

I won't miss it since I can't stand the taste of coffee. 🙂

For those that don’t know Mexia is pronounced Ma-hey-a, it’s kinda near Waco to the East. On Hwy 84, don’t blink or You’ll miss it.

Now about this cream cheese, raspberry preserves and chipotle adobo mixture. What goes with it ? Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Chips ? Spread it on Your Lover for spicing up a Date Night ? Fried Ice Cream ? Put some on the Bumper of a car to take the metallic taste outta the Bumper ?

From the article:
Authentic Italian TiramisĂą

Ingredients

6 egg yolks
280 gr sugar (1-1/3 cup)
80 gr water (1/3 cup plus 1Tbsp)
500 gr mascarpone (2-1/2 cups)
1 litre cream (4 - 1/4 cups)
500 ml brewed coffee (17 - 18 oz)
4 packets of savoiardi biscuits (ladyfingers)
1 shot of Disaronno liqueur (drop it into the coffee)

Method

Whisk the eggs until the mixture becomes thick and almost double the size.

At the same time, heat the water and sugar together. With a thermometer, make sure the water/sugar syrup reaches 120 degrees to pasteurize the eggs and kill any possible germs.

When the syrup reaches 120 degrees, start dropping it very slowly into the eggs while you continue whisking. When all the syrup has been added, keep whisking until it cools down.

Leave the mix in the fridge and start whisking 1 litre of cream. Make it as firm as possible.

Once the egg and sugar mix has cooled, add 500 grams of mascarpone and whisk it until it becomes consistent.

Mix the cream into the sugar mix—very slowly (otherwise you risk splitting the mixture).

Start building up the tiramisu. Start with 1/3 of the cream at the bottom.

Dip the Savoiardi biscuits into the coffee quickly. Add the first layer of biscuits making sure to cover all the cream.

Repeat the same thing twice, then just finish it at the top with one last layer of tiramisu cream and top with cocoa powder.

Leave in the fridge for at least 3 hours to get a better result.

Tiramisu is a very close second to flan, as my favorite dessert.
Like flan, it lends itself to countless delightful variations that are always an adventure.

Well the first time I came across it was in the UK at a hotel. It was creme cheese fill and powdered sugar on the top and they had spooned some sherry at the bottom and told me to wait while it seeped up towards the top.
