WASHINGTON, Wednesday, Oct. 30.
NOT GOING INTO WINTER QUARTERS.
I think I have sufficient authority for explicitly denying the statement that the army of the Potomac would go into Winter quarters within the lines of the present encampment or intrenchments. No such purpose is entertained by the Government, and no such suggestion has been made by Gen. MCCLELLAN. Indeed, within the past fortnight the activity of preparation has been greater than within the same time for the last two months. Of course, an army is to remain in and around Washing to defend the Capitol, and doubtless we shall have a large camp of instruction. For the men and horses constituting this force, Winter barracks will be provided, and timely preparations are making for this; but beyond this there is nothing being done that looks like inaction during the Winter months.
NO NEW MOVEMENTS.
Since the rebels have ran away from Gen. MCCALL's division, there is nothing of interest to report, the movements and position of our own forces being contraband. Our scouts range the country round for ten to fifteen miles, but find nothing except the desolated tracks of the rebel hordes.
There is a report in circulation here that the rebels were firing on BANKS' camp to-day, but there is no truth in it. All is quiet in his camp.
AFFAIRS ON THE LOWER POTOMAC.
The rebel batteries on the Potomac have been ineffectually playing upon our forces engaged in erecting counter batteries on the Maryland shore. The rebel steamer Page appears to be aground in Quantico Creek. She cannot escape without risking a few shots from our guns.
Two prisoners arrived at the Navy-Yard to-day, having been captured by our river force on suspicion of being spies. One was taken at Port Tobacco.

I haven’t posted about your postings, but, I do enjoy reading them.
It’s interesting to see how the information flowed into the paper, and, how the propaganda mill made up stuff that history proved different.
Thank You for your efforts!
I was stationed at Fortress Monroe, Garrison Company, in 1970 before the post was decommissioned. Jefferson Davis was imprisoned there for several years while the idea of hanging him was being kicked around. When the fort was built, one of the engineers was 2nd lieutenant Robert E. Lee. Lincoln was there for planning the battle of Hampton Roads. Being a soldier there really connected me with history and was a great experience.
