U.S. Department of Justice Likely to File Antitrust Lawsuit Against Apple

The United States Department of Justice is accelerating its antitrust probe into Apple and there is increased likelihood that Apple will face an antitrust lawsuit, reports The Information.

Citing internal sources with knowledge of the investigation, The Information says there has been a "flurry" of activity as the DOJ has continued to question Apple, its customers, and its competitors about Apple's control over the iPhone. The DOJ sent new subpoenas to Apple's business partners over the summer, and has assigned more staff to the probe.

Specifics have yet to be nailed down, but The Information's sources believe that the investigation will lead to a lawsuit. Apple has been under investigation by the DOJ for two years now, and the probe is part of a broad investigation that has seen the Justice Department looking into Apple, Google, Facebook, and Amazon.

The DOJ has spoken with Apple critics that include Spotify, Match Group, Basecamp, and Tile, all companies unhappy with Apple's App Store policies and control.

Attorneys involved in the probe will eventually give the Department of Justice a recommendation on whether or not to file a lawsuit against Apple, but no formal recommendation has been made at this point in time, and there's still a possibility that no case will be filed as the investigation is ongoing.

So the DOJ has brought upon itself to judge for me, an Apple customer, what services and security measures Apple takes on my behalf?

There are plenty of other equipment, software and services companies out there. I HAVE A CHOICE!

And I’ve made that choice. I LIKE the tight integration of hardware and software. I LIKE that fact that’s there’s a gate keeper for software I may, or may not choose to install on very personal devices. I LIKE the fact that Apple requires software vendors to fully disclose the information they collect about me, upon which I make the choice whether to use said software, or not.

I LIKE the ability for a single sign on. I’m sure as Hell not using google or fakebook. I LIKE that I can now set up throwaway email aliases.

Yea, this is all about the Benjamin’s. Pedo-Joe wants his cut.

F#&@* Joe Biden!

And once again we’re trying to change the definition of monopoly to “makes a lot of money”. Apple doesn’t have a controlling market share in anything. They aren’t a monopoly. They’re big. And yes for app maker the Apple Store can be a pain to navigate. But that’s not a monopoly.

I suspect they are going to put the screws to them to allow the Fed full access to its phone network.

Relevant anecdote:

TSA instituted the rule that all luggage sent thru “checked baggage” be unlocked. This being objected to by many, they conceded by allowing bags be secured with a lock which they had a master key to. Baggage makers duly conceded, and TSA ended up having a half-dozen master keys that could open any legally locked luggage.

Then Wired magazine did a story on the subject.
They got a photo of the master keys.
They published the photo of the master keys.
In 3 hours flat, you could buy a TSA master key on eBay.

Don’t let governments have master keys.

I consider gov’t-instituted “backdoors” a 3rd Amendment violation. One purpose of “quartering soldiers” was to present suspects with a “chilling effect”, dissuading dissenting behavior lest legally actionable content/behaviors be observed and ruthlessly acted on, simplifying paths to 4th Amendment searches/seizures. “Backdoors” places a virtual gov’t agent at your door, allowing entrance and observation without real cause and without ability to functionally resist search/seizure.

Well, this will shake down Apple. I predict money will now rain down into Democrat coffers ahead of 2022.

Just damn'. And here I really wanted that new Mac Mini. Not anymore. I don't want a single penny of my hard earned money to find its way into Democrat or "The Big Guy's" extortion coffers.

I'll stick with my Ubuntu 21.04 Desktop that looks like a Mac and gives me the benefits without the cost.

I’ve never owned an apple product and this kinda speaks to why. Too proprietary.

And yet most people own Apple Products for that very reason.

“Well, this will shake down Apple. I predict money will now rain down into Democrat coffers ahead of 2022.”

SHAKEDOWN is what this is! Dems want more campaign donations from the stupid libs who run Apple and their lib employees. Until then, this lawsuit by Dept of Justice will proceed.

Apple — Make it rain! Or feel the pain. From the USG.
