LOS ANGELES — The assistant director who handed Alec Baldwin the gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on a movie set last week had been fired from a film in 2019 after a gun unexpectedly discharged on the set, injuring a crew member, a producer for that film told NBC News on Monday.
The previous incident occurred in New Mexico during the filming of “Freedom’s Path,” said the producer, who worked on the movie. The assistant director, Dave Halls, was removed from the set immediately and later fired, according to the producer.
“Dave was very remorseful for the events and understood the reasons he was being terminated,” the producer told NBC News.
The injured crew member, who was working on sound, recoiled after the blast and was told to seek medical attention after being evaluated by an on-set medic, the producer said.
The extent of the crew member’s injuries wasn’t clear, but the person returned to production a few days later, the producer said, adding that a new assistant director was hired and the film was completed.
Halls did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
Authorities in New Mexico, where the Oct. 22 shooting on the set of “Rust” that also injured Joel Souza, have not charged anyone in the shooting.
Maggie Goll, a special effects technician who worked on the set of a Hulu series with Halls in 2019, said the assistant director did not maintain a safe working environment on the set.
In a statement to NBC News, Goll said Halls did not hold safety meetings or announce when a gun had appeared on the set. He also tried to keep filming after the lead pyrotechnician on the series, "Into the Dark," suffered a medical emergency, she said.

All anyone considering hiring would need to do is just look at her. Nope.
Different sources are trying to diminish Baldwin’s guilt but the bottom line is, had Baldwin checked the revolver and any related ammo, he would not have killed the woman.
Is this possible with no human input? If so then the gun controllists have an argument.
And, it sounds like PRODUCER Alec Baldwin didn’t do his due diligence on this guy’s background.
Too bad the cinematographer didn't sense the danger.
Doesn’t anyone at least read part of the articles? This was not the girl. This was the assistant director.
What makes you think Baldwin knows anything about guns?
They hire people for that.
Right you are. The buck stops with him.
Anyone know - the distance between cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and Baldwin when he shot her?
What caliber was the bullet?
Because he’s been using them in movies for over 30 years.
So, we found the scapegoat. Baldwin skates.
Movies aren’t real life. Unless someone has other information, all we know is that he’s shot prop guns, guaranteed safe and ‘cold’ by people specially hired to handle this stuff on a movie set.
(Considering his temperament, I certainly hope nobody has let him near a live gun...)
Presumably Baldwin hired both of these clowns and then did nothing when apparently there were previous accidental firings of live bullets. Not to mention firing the gun himself.
Would a 2nd Amendment supporting actor who has used "guns" in TV and movies for over 40 years qualify?
Actor John Schneider reacts to Alec Baldwin's prop-gun fatal shooting | 'Wake Up America'
“Movies aren’t real life.”
This wasn’t a movie. It was real life. She was real, and. dead.
Baldwin’s company is working hard to control the narrative.....why?
He seems to be making the point that the firearms experts, hired specifically to follow certain protocols and ensure safety, are the first line of defense in a situation like this. But we’ve heard stories of there being dissatisfaction on the set, people walking off, people using the guns for ‘fun’ in their off time, and live rounds being found where the blanks were stored.
The most important point Schneider makes in legal terms is that there was no reason for a live round to be in that gun or anywhere near the production.
I’m no fan of Baldwin, but I think finding him guilty is going to be a hard sell to a jury.
