ANYBODY SEEN IT YET?..........................
Will there be some spicy scenes?
“ANYBODY SEEN IT YET?..........................”
First five minutes.
I watched it on HBO Max, it’s pretty much as it’s described in this article, I did not read the books so I can’t tell you how it tracked to the written word...it’s obviously setting up for the sequel...
I also concluded it has a more hard edged Star Wars feel to it with the main character similar to Luke Skywalker, the reluctant Jedi who will save the galaxy....
It is visually stunning and interesting, I enjoyed it but if it were not on HBO Max I would not go see it in a theater...
Much better than the early 80s version.
Boring! Turned it off after 10 minutes.
Saw it last night. Better than the first movie back in the day, but yea, they stopped halfway through, with a “maybe” for the second half? WTF!
Granted, it’s was a long movie, a little over 2.5 hours. So to do it right it would have to be at least two movies.
They say the movie cost $165M to make and took in $40M opening weekend domestically. Apparently it’s been playing in Europe for a few weeks and is doing well. But they’re also streaming on HBOMax for a limited time. That may hurt or help.
My wife and I watched it on HBO Max on Saturday. We both liked it. Neither of us had read any of the books, and I had seen the 1984 version once back when it came out. I did not like the 1984 version, and did not expect to like this new one. We were able to follow the story fairly well. The reviewer is correct about the low-key nature of the acting. But much of that acting (particularly by Rebecca Ferguson) is of barely contained fear and trepidation. I thought the movie had a sense of tension throughout, that something terrible and tragic was waiting in the wings.
It was visually impressive with great CGI effects. It was rather loud through my 5.1 sound system, and I felt compelled to turn on subtitles in order to get all the dialogue without blasting the roof off our house. If it truly followed the novel (I can't say as I never read it) it was apparent to both my wife and me that Star Wars stole a lot from the original story. I look forward to Part II. It's a shame they have not started on it yet, but I guess they are not sure where the movie industry is headed now that so many people have been scared away from theaters.

I watched it in HBOMax. You can’t fit a story that big into even two movies, but I was impressed. If you read the book you will notice some of the liberties that were taken (Kynes is a black woman?) and I think they accentuated the similarities between the Freman and Islam more than I would have preferred, and I thought Leito also got short shrift.
That being said, it is visually stunning (the sand worms do not disappoint) and I thought the music score was great to set the feel. Develop a little book amnesia and go for the ride. It is great space opera and I liked it enough to watch it again.
They should have shot the two halves at the same time. No guts no glory (and perhaps no completion).
Saw it day it came out. I really liked it. I’m a huge fan of the book, I feel this version is respectful of that text. The only nit is that it’s just half the story and I have to wait years fur the rest.
Lots of comments https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/4006083/posts
I watched it last night.
It was long, unnecessarily so in my opinion. Some of the backstory stuff was detailed and tedious. I guess it will come into play in Part III or so...
I never finished the book, so I am not sure about the use of Arabic symbolism and accents in the original.
There were visual references to Star Wars and Apocalypse Now which were obvious and almost distracting.
If you are well-read, and well-watched in culture and film...it almost seemed juvenile. I don’t mean that in a bragging way, but being well read means you will recognize different cultural themes. Having been a movie fan my whole life, there was some imagery-stealing from past movies.
And why do people all have to have accents that are almost undecipherable. I know they are on another planet...but if you are going to use earth metrics, why not use easy accents? I mean, when someone on a fantasy planet uses “meters” in their conversation...I think the fantasy is broken, no?
No but its on my radar. My daughter wants to come but she has to get vaccinated first.
I haven’t seen it... I will not see it... I do not watch HBO...
However, one of my great grandsons (age 12) saw it and told me it was crap compared to the original...
That’s good enough for me...
I haven’t.....With that being said, I hate movies that require sequels and at my age, I might die before the next sequel or an ending arrives........
I have seen it. If you liked the book you’ll like the movie. Great cast and first class production values. But ... ponderous. I thought it could have used some lightness. And It concludes about halfway through the book. I thought Chalomet and Channi were a bit miscast. JMHO.... Saw it in 3D which made it even more impressive.
Yes.
I felt the split coming about thirty seconds before the film ended. It just “felt right” to me to end it there and continue in the follow-on film(s).
It’s a big long story. I saw the 1984 version and liked it, though I would have been as confused as many in the theater were, had I not read the book already.
The above paragraphs could just as easily been written word-for-word about “The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring”.
I saw it yesterday, and as you can see by my screen name, I am a fan of all the books. I loved the movie. I didn’t think I would, but it won me over. I heard last night on a radio news blurb that they will be making Dune Part 2, to come out in October 2023. Hope I am alive to catch it!
Hi Duncan! Was happy to see your post and screen name!
No. And I don’t plan to. I refuse to support Hollyweird.
