I assume these people spent the rest of their lives with an exposed skull?I seem to recall reading that was the case.

I hate it when that happens.

That my friend was only half of the story. As cruel as scalping may seem, when the Indian tribe woman “ cleaned up” the battlefields, they descended on the fallen bodies and cut off the unlucky enemies testicles….history noted many of Custer’s soldiers were found without testicles, a book I have that was written in the early 1900’s documents Custer’s last stand from eye witness Indian accounts….reports that more than a few soldiers were feigning death until the woman came along and went to work, sorry Johnny, yes the Indian tribes of the west were as reported- vicious and cruel.

The jerk who posted the photo on “Quora” comments something like, “Maybe they killed him in revenge for all the buffalo he had killed”.

LOL!
Only took me that one time to learn about scalping.
We did see the concert, but found out that tickets were only $35 each, so the $80 overage was a lesson.
Once burned, twice learned.

“Maybe they killed him in revenge for all the buffalo he had killed”.
George Catlin told of the Sioux who slaughtered 1400 buffalo, cut out the tongues and brought them to the trading post to trade for whiskey.
The tongues were salted and shipped East, the rest of the buffalo was left to rot.

Interesting to see they only took the first 3-4 inches above the hairline.

I can’t believed they survived that attack. In general, I believe they didn't survive but occasionally, in the heat of an attack, a not-yet-dead white would be scalped, survive, recover and live out their days badly disfigured. Some lived into the 20th century.
