Soule, an amateur photographer [and] chief clerk in Tappin's Trading Company, took the picture. The officer is Lieutenant Reade, 3rd Infantry. John O. Austin, Chief of scouts, is on the right. The photo was taken within an hour after the killing.

I didn’t know they scalped people that late.
The plains of Kansas in the 1860s were a tough place. The massive bison herds attracted the fiercest of the tribes, the Cheyenne, the Comanche, the Arapaho, the Kiowa who weren’t about to share it with anyone.
wonder why different models of military helicopters were named after indians... š¤...
The process is chillingly simple: Descending on a fallen foeā living or deadāthe victor hops on his or her back, places one or both knees between the victimās shoulders, wraps the hair around one hand and traces a circle or semicircle around the crown of the skull with his knifepoint. Using his knees for leverage, he wrenches the hair āskin and allāfrom the skull, often to the accompaniment of a distinct popping sound. When carried out by an experienced person, the actual deed is accomplished in a matter of seconds.

I hate it when that happens.
But wait, I thought the “indigenous” were innocent and the evil white supremacists did all the killing.
In the 1960s and 1970s the revisionists tried to blame scalping on the White Man.
In the movie SOLDIER BLUE Candice Bergen claims whites taught the Indians to scalp.
Then a farmer found a large numbers of skeletons at Crow Creek, South Dakota. Now scalping by Indians goes way back to the 1300s and 800AD.

When the Mexican government started offering gold for Apache scalps, several Scalp hunter companies started into the business. The best were Shawnee Indians from Oklahoma and Freed Blacks.
I got scalped once.
$150 for 2 tickets to Jefferson Airplane & The Byrds, in 1967.
I thought this was going to be about Hunter Biden paying too much for concert tickets.
That is fascinating. If they were scalped, meaning the skin was completely ripped off from the skull, then I assume these people spent the rest of their lives with an exposed skull? That must be the case because I can’t see how the skin could grow back.
LOL! Happened to me and my friend in the 1980s, this black dude came up to us at Penn station NYC and said he could sell us two tickets to see the Rolling stones, $40 bucks a piece so we gave it to him. And he told us to wait right here, he be coming back with the tickets just as soon as he got them from the hotel Pennsylvania across the street. Guess what? He never came back! What a surprise! LOL. True story, we were naive as hell.
That is horrible. Sounds like something the Assyrians would gave enjoyed.
I thought they spent the rest of their lives...dead
That same guy likely went on to make a career of selling tickets to the Statue of Liberty and the Staten Island Ferry!
That happened to my brother in law, my husband told him not to trust the guy with the “tickets.” Brother in law was a know it all and did not listen to his older brother. They were late teens, early 20s. Brother in law lost $200. This was in the late 70s.
Happened in Detroit.
