Wife has been blacklisted from sub teaching over Covid remark.
She did not intend to hurt the child’s feelings, She has worked with kids her whole life. Just an error in judgement.
The main problem is the besmirching of her reputation via Facebook. She is the most requested substitute and has never been in trouble before. She is taking this hard.

First, please keep in mind that most people are not as gullible as you think. Most people are going to be a little skeptical about what is being said. Anyone who has taught or coached kids know that they often go back to their parents with exaggerated stories.
Second, the best way to “attack” this is by either:
1) going directly to the family and defusing the situation;
2) or having your wife write-—or you write it in her defense—that says that what these parents are putting out there is inaccurate/out of context. Call them out for not contacting the teacher/your wife directly and asking for clarification; semi-mock them for believing the exaggerated/distorted claims of a child; note how it’s a shame that adults would spread misinformation out on Facebook based on what a kid claimed was said.
BTW, you should advise your wife that, again, most adults will not automatically believe what some aggrieved parent puts up on FaceBook.
Wow.
Assumption is the mother of all eff-ups.
In my state there are now only 2 requirements to be a sub due to said ‘desperation’:
1. Over 18,
2. Pass a background check.
“It sure didn’t take long for this affluent society to turn into a collective group of pampered losers with no coping skills.”
Before Facebook, that is probably how it would be handled. I don’t know if the parent even went to the principal first. Like I said, she doesn’t want to talk about it. I think my wife first heard about it from the principal.
Possibly the faceBook posts could be considered defamatory. Contact FaceBook to have them taken down. Forget the job. It’s over. She should either go to another school or consider another line of work.
She shoulda lied and said she didn’t say that. Her word against the kid’s.
Democraps do it all the time.
Wait...your wife wanted the kid’s grandpa dead sooner?
I’m sorry this is happening to your wife, But consider the opposing point of view.
Kid comes up and says their grandparent died of COVID, your wife says too bad he should’ve been vaccinated.
I’m certain that’s not exactly how it happened, but that could be how the kid sees it, right?
‘She did not intend to hurt the child’s feelings, She has worked with kids her whole life. Just an error in judgement.’
I’m not a lawyer. Doesn’t take a lawyer to know the question of intent will come up. It will require a positive answer. Not a “the intent was not…”, but rather, “the intent was…”.
The many years with nuns, Bing Crosby movie type, revealed much in matters of death. Many grandparents died among grammar school classmates. The nuns, about whom many told of being abusive (I never saw first hand), were tough talking about our behavior and decisions, I never heard them scold our families’ decisions, certainly not our dead ones, and not while we were in grief and no one ever reported such, and they would have.
People might find that they can be more scolding than a a Dominican nun out of the 1960s about tge vaccine. I’ve witnessed it. And from people who state they hated the nuns for ‘ruining their lives’ by being scoldy. But people will find it’s not true. The vaccine push might give people a pass on everything but as in all dictatorships that safety is provided only to tge dictator and their chosen few. Not to the subjects.
> I’d be embarrassed for my wife being that insensitive... <
Yes, it was an insensitive remark. But it was not made with any malice. So an apology should be enough. A teacher interacts with many students every day, and dozens of topics come up. It’s not easy to be 100% on guard at all times.
I taught high school science for many years. Well, one day in lab a student asked me how to approach a problem. I answered with a quote from the Bible: “As the Bible says, Seek, and ye shall find.“
That was 20 years ago. No big deal. But today I guess some parent could accuse me of trying to indoctrinate their child.
Ah...but did he REALLY die from Covid?
Keep convo simple with children.
Your wife and you don’t really know what the kid went home and told their parents.
Could have been a story that the kid perceived but never happen.
Well stated. Teacher provides teaching moment for the rest for us. She gets to go to the head of the class; it’s down the hall, second door on the right.
She may want to look into tutoring kids in homeschooling. Some parents/pods are looking for teachers or people who can help teach the kids. I think the pay is pretty decent & no @sshole principals to deal with (if that’s an issue in this case).
Give it some time for the media attention to blow over and your wife will be hired again.
AND, those demanding that every one be vaccinated would get the exact same treatment and also warned that whatever their arsonist tongues incited would get them the same treatment. If folks don't stop trying to force others to suscribe to their point of view, they are going to get a leader who will have the power and will to get all of this arguing stopped. I have an even better idea for all of the government officials involved in this. And those who work providing social media platforms would, once their education was finished, be fanatical missionaries going everywhere telling people to never, ever develop such platforms nor participate in them. Perhaps I will elaborate on that later.
I feel bad for your wife, but I must agree.
Think about it. Just how much influence can a child possibly have over medical decisions made, perhaps after consulting with their doctors, by mature adults?
Substitute teacher: "Oh, that's so sad! Was he a smoker?"
Likewise a big no-no!
