Anyone seen the new Dune? Is it Woke or otherwise polluted with leftism? Worth the money to see it in a theater?
The “trick” for the film-maker is not to “faithfully follow the plot line” but to capture all of the major themes in a creative and engaging way that uses the strengths of the visual medium.
That is where many sci-fi films crash and burn.
One of the earlier posters noted that the first “Total Recall” was a great movie. I agree—but the “trick” was re-creating and amplifying the uniquely paranoid vision of Philip K. Dick.
Imho all of the other movies based on his short stories/novels have fallen flat because they were unable to do so.
Bullshit movie.
I have seen it. It’s not “woke.” Not lefty.
IMHO, it’s a Galactic “Game Of Thrones” without the gratuitous “sexposition.” It’s “Star Wars” with maturity and gravitas. It’s the antidote to Star Trek’s campy, card board characters and comic book society. The quality (not the plot) of the movie can be described as what you’d get if G.R.R. Martin had collaborated with J.R.R. Tolkien to write “Foundation” as an original screen play.
The dictionary makers will be busy updating their definitions of ‘epic’ so that they reference this movie.
As a book reader, my opinion is that the movie is a masterpiece, with one flaw: Even using 2 hours and 40 minutes to cover half of the first book, it missed the mark in one way that actually matters (this is not about favorite/fun scenes in the book that aren’t in the movie, although those exist.) The book makes it seem like the Atreides have time to settle in, to make it begin to feel like Arrakis is actually becoming their new home, that they actually have a reasonable chance at becoming successful stewards of the planet, as the Emperor commanded. And because of that, the book reader feels the sudden, unexpected strike that destroys all those hopes much more deeply. It has more of a shocking, emotionally devastating, “Red Wedding” effect.
take a hard look at some of the 1 star reviews on imdb and rotten tomatoes ... almost all the positive reviews are fake for ALL movies these days, so the only honest ones are the low ones ... i read a bunch of these and decided not to waste my time and money like i got tricked into with the utterly NOT Sopranos movie ...
btw, the “official” reviewer reviews have been complete lies now for at least 10 years, so don’t waste your time with those ...
Liet-Kynes was a genius planetologist. He was sent to Arrakis to 'study' it by the Emperor, mostly to get rid of him cause he was a pain in tha ass on Salusa Secundus.
He quickly went native and offered the Fremen the dream of turning their desert world into a paradise by ecological manipulation. The Fremen deified him.
He, like the Fremen, did not choose sides between their opressers, neither the Harkonnens or the Atreides, until they saw that the Atreides were of a different sort, proven by Duke Leto's valuing the spice crew over the spice, which Liet-Kynes was a witness to.
As a side-note, one thing WAS politically motivated in the film.
In the book, the thought of a revolution against the Empire was spoken of as a 'war'. In the book, it was 'jihad'. The Fremen were moslems (actually, Buudislamics), believe it or not, and had been the Empire's slaves for thousands of years during the machine crusade, until the first space folding ship allowed them to escape to Arrakis.
So as not to invoke moslems or jihad, they changed the wording to 'war'.
We turned it on… it was some Star Wars tremors c movie.
“What is the best Sci-Fi film of all time?”
“Blade Runner” version with voice-over and the first “Alien”
“The Expanse” is by far the best TV series science fiction ...
Take a look at "Old Henry." May be the best western since "Unforgiven."
Dark City (1998). Starring Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, Richard O'Brien, and William Hurt. Directed by Alax Proyas, who made "The Crow." If you like SF and have you've never seen it you owe it to yourself to take a look.
And they wouldn't even have to make it up from scratch. The books are already written. There is a book on the origins of the Bene Geseritt, the Mentats, the Swordmasters (Duncan Idaho), the Bene Tleixu, the Guild Navigators, and all in the timeline from the Butlerian Jihad and the Machine Crusade.
The Best thing they could do is start from the earliest book in the series and run right through to the end, where we discover that Duncan Idaho is the hero of the universe.
Wouldn't people like to know how two best friends (Harkonnen and Atreides) became blood feud enemies for eternity?
Its all in there, and its amazing.
Sorry its not Hee Haw or The Price is Right.
In the book “Dune”, Paul evolves into a living god ( with help of sand trout) who see’s all and knows all in the universe. They seem to leave this out in the movies. Or do I have my books mixed up.
Sorry if you didn’t see the left wing propaganda. Not to mention the washed out bluescreen stuff. Everything out of focus.
Can't think of all of them right off, but Serenity jumps to mind.

So about the same as the David Lynch version LOL.
I saw the preview for it this morning. Looked like something I wouldn't watch.
I know, right!
Love The Expanse. Seems like the writing got better and the plots deeper after Amazon took it over.
That is more the plotline of the two sequels Frank Herbert wrote to Dune. (He wrote more but I consider the the first three to be the real Dune canon.) I really liked the second two books but many don’t.
First Dune is a masterpiece.
I expect it is woke and I refuse to see it. One can not remake the original. One mind as well try to remake Star Wars. Of course, if they did, you know they would make Han Solo black...and gay.
