Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed in an incident involving a prop gun on the set of “Rust,” an Alec Baldwin film that was shooting in New Mexico on Thursday.
A second person was injured, and was receiving emergency care at a hospital in Santa Fe.
Hutchins’ death was confirmed by the International Cinematographers Guild, Local 600.
“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called ‘Rust’ in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set,” said John Lindley, the president of the guild, and Rebecca Rhine, the executive director, in a statement. “The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family.”
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office said it was investigating the incident, which was reported at 1:50 p.m. Mountain Time at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a popular filming location south of Santa Fe.
“The Santa Fe County sheriff’s office confirms that two individuals were shot during filming of a scene on the set of the movie western ‘Rust’,” the office said in a statement. “According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged. Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.”

This doesn’t rub me right.
I’ve been on set during pistol play. Granted, this is in Mexico so I’m sure that no one there had any qualifications to do this (Because I’ve also been to mexico) but what gets me is that two people were “shot”.
One died. We don’t know where the “hit” was, but we know she died. That’s horrible.
Wads and blanks will kill at point blank and will pierce skin and “F you up” at a few inches to a foot. If she was behind a camera with Baldwin in front of the camera the raneg should have been fine. It would be one of those “WHOA I didn’t know it would do THAT!” moments and the crew would setup differently.
But two?
Alec Baldwin is a jerk. That’s a fact. Ask his friends and family, they’ll concur. I’m willing to bet he DID put it up to her as a joke and pulled the trigger.
And a second guy?
This is going to be a very, very telling court case. Because he’s going to court. If he doesn’t go to court something is seriously wrong. He may even go to Mexican court where they would love (lovelovelove) to incarcerate an American of status.
A second shot and second injury eliminates enough ‘whoopsies’ to make this a very likely crime.

Two people nailed with a prop gun and (I assume) blanks. This is gonna be interesting. Too bad competent investigative reporters are nearly extinct.
Baldwin fired the gun.

Negligent homicide?
It actually was a Columbo episode.
One killed and one injured. How could that be from a wad? It sounds like someone left a real gun around and they screwed up.
Maybe she was a Trump supporter?
We were learning orienteering, when one guy brought a live rattle snake in, and an instructor blew its head off with a blank.
Killed the cinematographer and wounded the director. At a minimum, he is going to get sued. I wonder if this will cause him to reflect on “gun violence,” and the fact that when people get shot, the guns don’t fire themselves. Criminals and negligent people do.

It was probably a blank gun, and ol’ Alec was just too smart and important to learn how to be safe with one of them.
How do you shoot two people accidentally with blanks?
The first shot should have shown damage to one or the other and one was a killshot.
The wadding didn’t go through one and hit the other.
With all his films its criminally negligent to not know of the dangers of blank guns.

A blank can kill you if it hits you in the right spot.

Yup, sounds like one real bullet with two people in line. Who knows at this point, but cinematographer and someone else makes me think a movie scene didn’t pan out, if it was Baldwin.
