Lucky you - our Wmart needs an upgrade. I have quit shopping there other than when they have something I need that will be difficult to find elsewhere, or I’ll have to take a much longer drive to get it from another store. That is why I was there yesterday - got 2 items I couldn’t find in the stores where I do shop.

“I’m encountering cashiers who can’t count money”

That problem has been around for at least a decade.
Once I bought something, the total came to $5.37. I gave the cashier $10.02. She tried desperately to figure out what I was doing. She had that deer in the headlights look. I finally told her what the pennies were for. She still didn’t know how to ring the cash tendered. I told her to put $10.02 on the register and hit the cash tendered key.
When I walked away I could hear the gears crashing in her head.

It got so bad that many fast food joints have a screen that shows the cashier exactly how much to give back...in pictures.
A picture of each bill and/or coin you are due back will show up with a number telling the cashier how many quarters, dimes, nickels, whatever to give you.

We have arrived at Idiocracy.

Retired early here....best decision for me. So I don’t have to deal with the public unless on my terms.

“I thought WalMart was for illegals only.”

Where did you get that absurd idea?

This rumor keeps floating up and around.

Most Walmart stores do not accept cash nor checks at their self checkout lines.

I’ve paid cash for my groceries at Walmart long before this covid stuff started. I’ve never had a problem, but I don’t use the self checkout lines, either. I prefer talking to the people in line and the cashier! I also pay cash for gas, coffee, small purchases, etc. LOL

Feel free to shop wherever you choose.
At least while Biden lets us.

Those are scary stories.

Once DH and I went to a fast food place in CA (In-N-Out, I think), and the power went out just as we were paying. Hubby gave the kid a $20 or something — more than the bill — and the clerk didn’t have a screen telling him how much change to give back. We cringed, wondering when we’d get out of there.

The drawer was open, and the kid proceeded to give back correct change, zip zip zip. No problem. I asked, “Home schooled?” Him: “Yep.”

This is vaguely like “a cash run”, a very scary thing.

Only about 3.5-4% of daily commerce in the US is backed by cash. That is, paper money and coin. If suddenly consumers decided they needed cash, branch banks would be emptied in just an hour or two. That is the start.

An iron law of economics is Gresham’s Law, which states when there are two competing currencies, people will hoard the strong one and spend the weak one.

A cash shortage instantly means that by its scarcity, cash is worth at least 20-25 times its face value. A nickel is worth a dollar. And *everyone* will want cash.

It also means the opposite to the weaker currency, even if it is virtual.

If you want something priced at a dollar, you can buy it for a nickel. But if you want it on credit or by check, it costs twenty dollars.

The best part is that LOTS of things can cause “cash runs”.

ATMs charge fees.

If I need up to $100, I can go to Wal-Mart (or, more likely in my area, Meijer),

buy something I was planning to buy anyway for say $4.25,

put my card in,

and walk out with a $4.25 item and ...

(wait for it) ...

$100 cash ...

which I got from ...

Walmart.

(or Meijer.)

Drunkenness not required.

Maybe you're not as humble a gunner as you ought to be...

“Stores dont like cash, neither do banks. There is no coin shortage, companies and banks dont want to pay for the infrastracture to handle cash and coin deposits.”

And when the “infrastructure” becomes the card....then comes Revelation of John. The Body Shot the Man of Sin right in line.

I had to stop at one last night around 8pm and it was credit/debit only at self-checkout, no cash back and no cash payments.

There was one register regular line open for those paying cash but 25 people in line and about a 30 minute wait.
