Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, made a rare and personal political statement on Wednesday as she wrote a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer advocating for paid family leave.
'I'm not an elected official, and I'm not a politician,' Markle opened. 'I'm writing to you at this deeply important time - as a mom - to advocate for paid leave.'
The duchess went on to detail her humble beginnings. 'I grew up on the $4.99 salad bar at Sizzler,' she said. 'I knew how hard my parents worked to afford this because even at five bucks, eating out was something special, and I felt lucky.'
'I started working (at the local frozen yogurt shop) at the age of 13. I waited tables, babysat, and piecemealed jobs together to cover odds and ends. I worked all my life and saved when and where I could—but even that was a luxury—because usually it was about making ends meet and having enough to pay my rent and put gas in my car.'
'I expect many of your constituents have their own version of that story,' she continued, before bashing the American economic system.
'Many of our economic systems are past their expiration date, and as you well know, too many Americans are forced to shortchange themselves when it comes to what matters to them.'
The royal then recognized that she had not struggled in the same way many new parents who are not offered paid leave do.
'In June, my husband and I welcomed our second child. Like any parents, we were overjoyed. Like many parents, we were overwhelmed. Like fewer parents, we weren't confronted with the harsh reality of either spending those first few critical months with our baby or going back to work.'

“$4.99 salad bar at Sizzler”
Perhaps before my time but I was well into adulthood before even hearing of “all you can eat” places like Sizzler. Coming up I never went to bed hungry but steady helpings of “taters & maters” got old. Best I can say as a recommend for “Stone Soup” is that it’s hot...on a good day.
No one cares!!!!
Based on what? How many other “rights” are we endowed with that others must pay for?
Young? She’s a hard forty.
In the mid-90’s I was a young Marine officer flying F/A-18’s in California. I practically lived off that $4.99 Sizzler salad bar for lunch. I certainly didn’t consider myself poor, in fact I felt like I’d hit the jackpot with my career. That salad bar was a pretty danged good meal, you’d have to be pretty entitled to think that it was beneath you to eat it.
“Poor” Meghan in her nice car (with “Classy Girl” license plate holder) shopping in Beverly Hills just prior to leaving for Northwestern University, which daddy also paid for. The Douchess of Sussex (a title with zero meaning in the USA) is a complete fraud.

Oh Poor little MeAgain.
I remember the Sizzler Salad Bar or the equivalent being a rare treat, and my parents were far from struggling.
Yea, sweetie, and you used to be able to eat a steak at a diner for $0.50
At a salad bar, a well stocked one, you can feed a family quite well. And besides I’ve heard veggies are cool.
“...Beans gonna burn in the kitchen. Beans gonna burn on the grill.
Tooka whole lotta tur-rye-in, ajusta get up that hill...”
IOW, she thinks she’s a Jefferson.

I imagine that the Royals are thrilled she is living here.
That's how I got thru college, sweetheart.
In late ‘80’s early ‘90’s $4.99 was not cheap for a lunch, and Sizzler was not a bad place to eat.
She had it good.
Isn’t she in her 40s?
Exactly what constituency do Pelosi and Schumer think this woman has? Are there ten or twenty Americans who care enough to dislike the House of Windsor, thus admiring her small part of dragging it down? Obviously Sparkle Markle wants attention, but do the Dems actually think she’ll influence anyone to support their communist crap who doesn’t already?
the person who insisted on moving to America for ‘privacy’ and who didn’t want her children to have titles, while clinging desperately to her own British title needs to butt out of American politics, since her loyalties lie elsewhere - like Canada.
I'm STILL waiting for someone to give us a total calculation of the BILLIONS that are available, annually, to the ‘under served’ in the US.
Between the money taken from taxpayers and the MANY government programs and agencies which provide for them, NO ONE in the US needs to be starving or even homeless.
There's a church on every street corner and wall-to-wall charities.
Seriously, I know people who claim they're struggling but who all have the latest, most expensive cell phones and a newer car than I do.....etc. Their perspective on ‘doing without’ is not realistic!
The only thing she can’t afford these days is the truth.
