In recent days, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) has told associates that he is considering leaving the Democratic Party if President Joe Biden and Democrats on Capitol Hill do not agree to his demand to cut the size of the social infrastructure bill from $3.5 trillion to $1.75 trillion, according to people who have heard Manchin discuss this. Manchin has said that if this were to happen, he would declare himself an “American Independent.” And he has devised a detailed exit strategy for his departure.

The AssPress and CNN were clearly told to go negative on Manchin. Now Mother Jones drops this.

Interesting to think how this story plays out, though. Are they applying pressure to Manchin by “outing” him, or are they applying pressure to the Administration and others to agree to his demands?

I thought his cap was 1.5, he's already caving.

With WV having gone for Trump by about 65%-25%...both times...that would be a wise move,a move that the state that he represents would support.

This is not “negative on Manchin”.
Leaving the Democratic Party is the most positive thing one can do.

If he leaves the Demonrats and becomes an “American Independent”, will he caucus with the GOP or the Demonrats ? If he leaves the Dems but still caucuses with them, nothing will change.

Manchin has said that if this were to happen, he would declare himself an “American Independent.”

As opposed to a "Mexican Independent?"

In a 51/49 Senate one Senator flipping is a big deal. I don’t believe Manchin does it. This is him just reminding the powers that be who are trashing him that he has plenty of power himself and they should back off.

He knows the Dems are going to get walloped in 22 and is positioning himself to go with the flow. In spite of themselves the Republicans will probably take control of both houses because the Dems are destroying the country. Manchin clearly see’s that.

Its all about his political career. Nothing else.

West Virginia is the second most Trumpian state in the union. Manchin knows his days are numbered if he folds and puts the Dems over the top in their 3.5 trillion spendfest. No matter what he does, I hope West Virginians dump him next time around for a real Republican, expecially if he plays it cute and declares himself and independent but caucuses with Dems.
