Tow industry. People love to use insurance, which pays pennies on calls.
Insurance per truck was 1500 a month, truck lease because CA forces 2012 and newer trucks, about 2000 per truck. Diesel is 4.50 avg. some places 5 per gallon. Takes 100 dollars in fuel per day. Insurance expects 10 free miles unloaded, 5 free loaded, 35 for the “hook fee.” Can’t afford to pay more then 15 an hour for drivers, especially with forced health insurance, workmen’s comp….
Result, less drivers, avg wait on a tow in San Jose is 90 minutes non AAA, anywhere between 1-4 hours for AAA.
Lockouts and jump starts are 75 minutes for us. Have to send a van because we lose too much money in fuel taking a truck out for those.
I’d like to get some of this cheap money you speak of. I’d love to qualify for free fed pork, but my Partner’s a felon, so we don’t qualify for those. Heaven forbid helping a man who realized he made a mistake as a teen and is going straight for his kids.
I’d love some near zero interest rates on anything. Where can I get some?
They ask what year you graduated high school on the application
It’s a way of keeping older workers out
No you couldn’t. I’ve got fifty applications out. I’ve had two interviews. Period
They ask what year you graduated high school. It allows them to avoid us older folks who must work because inflation is killing us
The interviewer said to him:
I only have one question for the interview...
Do you want the job?
My son's girlfriend got a job at the same place a few days later.
They hire all sorts of people there. Former military. Ex-cons. People that have had substance abuse problems. Young people.
This is what my son messaged to me in September after only working there a month:
So a grinder short fused on me and I took it to maintenance and the head of maintenance said "you broke it probably by carrying it by the cord."
I'm not there to argue so just say " it very well have could have been me." Then I get a new grinder and get back to work.
The next day comes and Matt the guy in maintenance walks up to me with my boss so I'm kinda pissing my pants thinking I'm gonna get fired for breaking the grinder. Then Matt says "I see you out here every day on time and always working and when you're out of work you look for more. And I really appreciate you not arguing with me yesterday. That shows character and that's the exact thing we need in maintenance."
So both he and his girlfriend started at $16 and they are already making $17 after a couple of months.
In the maintenance shop, my son gets to learn how to fix all kinds of things. He's been learning welding, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing. I told him what a great opportunity has been presented to him.
It is dishonest of you to post that statement without simultaneously qualifying it, i.e., without enumerating your stats (age, academic degrees, vocational training, job history).
Your statement is worse than meaningless without additional information enabling us to place it into the proper context.
Regards,
Pay for higher wages with higher prices... Thank you , President Carter, for the double-digit inflation. We needed that.
The laws of economics are hard to avoid.
If a job is worth $10/hr and workers demand $15, inflation is how economic law takes back that $5 increase.
Of course this is hard on unprepared older people.
Employment
Vs.
Gainfull Employment
One can’t GO to work and lose money.
Monopolies: TWO only big retailers. Banking consolidation. Insurance Self-regulated. No competition.
Business Insider is a FAR, FAR left propaganda outfit, basically the Rolling Stone of the biz world or The Manchester Guardian of the biz world, take your pick ... NOTHING they publish is credible because they lie so much ...
I’m searching for a new job as well and the employment websites utilize keyword search algorithms. Experience doesn’t matter, industry knowledge doesn’t matter, references don’t matter and you don’t interview anymore, they look for words in your resume. It would have been nice if one of the companies I applied with took the time to talk to me or read my experience. It’s been like that for while. Several years back, I had some pimply voiced kid ask me what some of my areas of expertise were, I responded back with my resume verbatim and he acted surprised. which is when I figured they didn’t read it.
Yes there is a labor crisis. But there is also something else going on ...on both sides of the spectrum.
2020 created an opportunity for diligent people to get education, up their skills, and as the economy opened up take on new roles and jobs. Or they decided they could survive as a 1 income family and focus on raising their children.
The otherside of that 2020 coin, employers had the opportunity to rid themselves of bad employees. Now that they are hiring, often at higher wages than ever before, they have drawn the line in the sand not to make the same hiring mistakes again.
It is important to keep in mind why minimum wage was initially instituted. We often say it was a ‘training’ wage for those with no skills etc. But, the reality is it was created to keep the unskilled, ignorant out of the labor pool.
At the current wage level, employers are willing to hire people with good attitudes and good ethics like your son. If employers are going to pay sign on bonuses, job benefits like education, etc. that money is going to be spent on people who make or can make great representatives of the company. Second, what many of the these people looking for jobs fail to realize is employers are looking at their social media too.
So in the case of this worker in Florida, I would suspect his social media presence is not stellar. Many small business employers lean conservative too and if your social media shows a strong propensity to progressiveness...you won’t even get a call.
Employers are hungry for workers, but many are not starving.
Oh this is absolutely true!
The applicant tracking systems are a nightmare for many.
One must tailor the resume to the keywords and position you are submitting it for. If you don’t, it won’t even be seen by a human!
“OK, will they hire you if you applied?”
Most likely at the restaurants as I cooked my way thru college.. No at the marina as he needs able bodied help, not a disabled senior.
As others have noted, employers are hungry for GOOD workers.
Thanks
That remains to be seen. I may have to retire suddenly.
So... Is there good guidance out there on how to deal with this?
I have received some feedback, which I will put into motion when I have the time.
