Unsavory behavior by fans at this past weekend’s Tennessee-Ole Miss game has sparked discussions around the SEC about how to better ensure the safety of those on the field.
On Monday, an important voice in the conference gave his thoughts on the matter and revealed that even he had an unfortunate interaction with patrons earlier this season.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban spoke about crowd control during his media session on Monday after Saturday’s game between Ole Miss and Tennessee. The end of the contest at Neyland Stadium was marred by fans throwing bottles, golf balls and other objects onto the field at players and coaches.
Saban didn’t give any specifics as to what the conference should do to police crowd behavior, but did say that it’s up to individual institutions and programs to create safe environments.
“I’ve said this before, we’re in the entertainment business. There’s a lot of people that come to the games. They have a lot of passion and excitement for what they do. Hopefully as institutions and fans, we’ll always do that in a positive way,” Saban said, via Charlie Potter of 247Sports......
Although most people were shocked to learn what happened, other Twitter users were a little more skeptical. There’s no direct evidence that the Alabama head coach was injured intentionally by a student or fan in College Station, which some were quick to point out.

I wouldn’t be surprised. “Fans” are worked up into a frenzy these days.
With the Coca Cola bottle perfectly placed, and the displayed bruise (is that a Rolex?)...
All just seems like a commercial to me.
Also...any word from the female that was assaulted by the storm trooper? Can we see her bruises?
Yes, product placement.
Yes, product placement.

I’m more fixated on the fella who brought a golf ball to a football game. I mean, that’s some forward thinking right there! This cat is playing 5-D chess!
FWIW, I think this is all in aid of providing the NCAA and unis with a handy excuse to stuff the stands full of fuzz to ensure that FJB never is chanted at another NCAAF game.
Back in the day I’d go to Raider games and fans would throw batteries.
I certainly hope that is a Rolex. The guy is a multi-millionaire for crying out loud.
Then they switch to “Let’s Go Brandon.” Can’t do a darned thing about it.
Well where I come from, throwing a golf ball at someone is called "assault", and that "fella" needs to be sitting in the clink for awhile.
By the way, if you haven’t seen it yet, check out this week’s “SEC Shorts”.
The funniest line about the game.
“The Tennessee PA announcer told the folks in the stadium not to throw any more objects on the field. Apparently the Tennessee QB thought that applied to him on the last play of the game, when he decided to run with the ball instead of throwing it in the End Zone.”
And the Mercedes Benz star
- Roll Tide -
College sports. Playing for the love of the bling. I mean game.
For those wondering and opining, Coca-Cola is a paying sponsor. That is why the bottle is there. Have been sponsoring Alabama athletics since Coach Bryant was coaching.
Nick Saban has invested in/own a Mercedes dealership. Also, Mercedes has a factory just outside Tuscaloosa. They also are a paying sponsor.
As far as the bruise goes, I have no idea. I do know that Texas A&M students stormed the field after defeating Alabama. Highly chaotic. Incurred a $250,000 fine from the SEC. He probably got the bruise during that.
And there will only be an issue if Tennessee wins as everyone (including the Vols) expect the Tide to Roll.
