WASHINGTON, Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The city is filled to-night with a story brought here by Paymaster DAVIS, from Harper's Ferry. According to his statement, the rebels, some three thousand strong, attacked a body of our troops under Major GOULD, who were at Bolivar, a suburb of Harper's Ferry. They had been over the river for some time gathering wheat and foraging through the country. According to his report, the rebels were three times repulsed by our troops, consisting of Col. GEARY's Regiment and six companies of the Thirteenth Massachusetts Regiment. The Paymaster gathered up his money and started for this city, while the battle was yet going on, and so he can give no particulars, nor the final result. You will probably get the particulars of the affair direct from Sandy Hook.

Late this afternoon a party of about twenty-five men from the New-York Thirty-fifth went out two miles beyond Falls Church, on a scout. They encountered a force of the enemy, and some brisk firing ensued. One of our men, private ALLEN, of Company H, while firing from behind a fence, was wounded, and left on the field. A retreat being ordered, the party fell back to our lines. A larger force was then sent out with an ambulance, to recover the body of ALLEN, in which they were successful.

Our scouts in the vicinity of UPTON's go, almost daily, four miles west of the line of Munson's Hill, and two miles beyond the line of our pickets. Our outposts have been extended to a point a mile beyond Falls Church, on the Leesburgh turnpike. The rebel picket lines have been correspondingly drawn in. Yesterday one of the topographical engineers made a reconnoissance of the country immediately north of Falls Church.
