The Gulag Archipelago is a book by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn about the Soviet forced labor camp system. The three-volume book is a narrative relying on eyewitness testimony and primary research material, as well as the author's own experiences as a prisoner in a gulag labor camp. Written between 1958 and 1968, it was published in the West in 1973 and, thereafter, circulated in samizdat (underground publication) form in the Soviet Union until its appearance in the Russian literary journal, Novy Mir, in 1989
I read half of it. A lotta dry reading. Anne Applebaum wrote another. Read half of it too. Russians say it’s in the past and would just as soon forget it.
Stalins mistake was thinking slave labor would lead to development.
I read the first volume at age 18. It sobered me, and saved me from any stupid liberal notions that may have been splashing around in my brain at the time. This snowflake generation would not get past the first chapter.

A how-to book for American Communist Democrats
I have read all of it. It is not easy reading, but very enlightening. He makes references to things Russians would understand that we know nothing about, but still well worth reading.
The condensed ones with a forward by Jordan Peterson is good. However much you read is worth it.
The forward is online and worth listening to: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XJwEBizQgYI
Most young Americans have no idea what went on in the Soviet Union, especially in their gulags. They think communism/socialism means everyone shares

I just finished reading the third and final volume of this masterwork.
Absolutely brilliant.
Every human should read this book. It shreds communism stem to stern, inside and out and leaves no room for doubt that it is a failed, tragic, hopelessly corrupt system of despair.
“Russians say it’s in the past and would just as soon forget it.”
Starting in 2009, excerpts from this book are required reading for all Russian high school students
