Seattle Public Schools (SPS) are suspending almost 150 bus routes due to a driver shortage in the country and some not abiding by the state's vaccine mandate.
There will be 142 bus routes suspended starting Monday due to a nationwide driver shortage and a shortage of drivers expected after the Oct. 18 vaccine mandate deadline, SPS said in a statement.
District spokesperson Tim Robinson says more than 6,700 students out of 18,000 could be affected by the cuts.
It is unknown exactly how many kids will be affected since the number who ride the bus changes every day.
The cuts won't affect students experiencing homelessness, foster students, special needs students and areas with "high proportions of historically underserved students."
"It's our hope that the staffing shortages faced by First Student will be resolved as quickly as possible so we can resume - and improve upon - all bus service," said SPS Assistant Superintendent of Operations Fred Podesta.
"In the meantime, we are actively looking for alternative solutions to this challenge, such as the expanded provision of ORCA transit passes for middle school students, and other modes of transportation," Podesta added.

Science says the vax and masks do not help.
Nothing says safety like “other modes of transportation”...
Stupid Dems now have a great opportunity to make sure their kids are even more stupid.
Q: Do you have any f_cks to give?
A: Go fish.
This BS is a blessing in disguise...
And an economic lesson for adults. Should I get vaccinated, wear a mask and drive a bunch of kids around for 250 dollars a week or sit at home for 300 dollars a week in extended unemployment benefits?
Hey Seattle moms and dads, enjoy your commute using Biden $5 gas, because of a vaccine mandate, also you liberal democrat rubes, you are contributing to global warming.
Bus? Ha! I used to walk 5 miles to school in the snow.
You left out the part about them being pitiful wastes of skin.
The $300 a week unemployment is done, but there is now a child tax credit, the question is now, does the single mother want to home school, or have the kids away for 8 hours in school.
So, they will cancel the buses in the middle class areas of town?
The real question to ask here....these traditional jobs like this...if you empty the worker-pot, does the job go away because you can’t fill the positions?
In this case, I would suggest two things happening. First, as you lessen your driver ‘pot’...the remaining drivers will get more lengthily drives and fuller buses. So ‘Johnny’ will enter the bus at 6:40 AM and ride for 75 minutes. The second observation, after a month of trying to fill the driver-positions and failing...HR is more likely to sign up people with past drug/alcohol problems and arrest records. Six to twelve months down the line, this will create fresh new problems.
“I used to walk 5 miles to school in the snow”
And it was uphill both ways! LOL
Actually, the question is: should I drive a bunch of covid-infected kids around in a big yellow sardine can for 250 dollars a week? Even this is a no-brainer.
uphill both ways??
Our cruise ended in Seattle one time and it took over 2 hours to get a taxi because ALL THE TAXIS PICK UP SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS AND TAKE THEM TO SCHOOL!! WTF??
ARTICLE IX - EDUCATION :: Washington Constitution
It is the paramount duty of the state to make ample provision for the education of all children residing within its borders, without distinction or preference on account of race, color, caste, or sex
Totally agree. We “may” get back to parents actually fixing their own kids’ lunches; taking them to school; and doing other things parents used to actually do.
