Used to take my mom into Tijuana/Rosarito/Puerto Nuevo to shop, eat lobster and replenish her liquor supply. She loved Mexico and she genuinely liked Mexicans. At the end of the day we’d go to the Calimax supermarket.

The baggers were maybe 8 or 10 years old. They were always dressed very neatly and took their jobs very seriously. They were serious because they were working for the money that their families needed to get by.

I remember being surprised by seeing a 14 or 15 year-old as the clerk in a liquor store. Life is tough down there.
