In an interview with The New Yorker, the Beatles member called rival British rock band The Rolling Stones a “blues cover band.”

SNIP

“I’m not sure I should say it, but they’re a blues cover band, that’s sort of what the Stones are,” McCartney, 79, said. “I think our net was cast a bit wider than theirs.”

SNIP

“They are rooted in the blues. When they are writing stuff, it has to do with the blues,” McCartney said at the time. “We had a little more influences … There’s a lot of differences and I love the Stones, but I’m with you. The Beatles were better.”

Who the F does Paul McCartney think he is??

I am generally no-nonsense & not awed by anyone. However, if I ever met Sir Paul, I suspect it would be a lot like this:

The real roots of the Rolling Stones.

Has that "rolling" quality, way back in the early fifties. This was originally the B side of a record that didn't make it. There might have been others, can't remember them now.

They may not be at their most ebullient right now since they just lost Charlie Watts.

Harrison was great with and after the Beatles!

I was talking about Lennon/Mccartney.

The Stones first hit in England was a cover of Lennon and McCartney’s “I Want To Be Your Man”.

What a joke coming from a member of the biggest fraud boy band of all time. The beatles couldn’t hold Keith Richard’s heroin syringe. The Stones were so far superior to the beatles they should probably not be spoken of in the same sentence.

This is an old argument that dates back to the the early Seventies. It has never been resolved because there are hardcore fans of both bands out there. Truth is they respect each other and I see nothing wrong with McCarthy’s comments.

Yes, McCarthy was into more of the pop genre then Rock, but his music was also enjoyable. McCarthy and Wings were part of a genre that include a lot of top “Rock” bands of the time. Compared to the Seventies early Metal bands, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd etc... Wings was a absolutely a pop band. It is a matter of taste and I enjoy Wings a lot more now then I did at the time. McCarthy was always the balladeer, Lennon, Harrison were the edgy types that liked to experiment. That was what made the Beatles work. Do not forget Ringo, he has had a lot of hits with a little help from his friends.

McCarthy did not lie, it is true that Lennon broke the band. He came in one day and announced he was leaving, there was an apparent unwritten agreement they would not announce the breakup until release of the last Beatles album. McCarthy decided for his own reasons to jump the gun and announce he was releasing his first post Beatles album. That caused some acrimony. But, while everyone dances on pins and needles if you look at how he treated his family especially after Ono, Lennon was a bit if a self centered bastard. Loved “Double Fantasy,” though, except the crap obviously written by Ono. When compared to the Metal music of that time, Double Fantasy was a pop album.

Reminds me of an old National Lampoon album - a parody rant by Lennon about the Stones. It’s been a while - all I remember is “....and Mick Jagger.....wigglin’ his a**.....you know it’s just a lot of bull****....”

John Lennon wasn’t exactly the standard bearer of taste and discernment. As much as you dislike McCartney’s music after the Beatles, you have to admit it was better than anything Yoko One ever made, and Lennon never disparaged her garbage.

I still like the Stones better than the Beatles, but I’m not a standard bearer of taste either.

Just watched a documentary about Gordon Lightfoot. Gord says he would work months on putting multiple ballads together for an album together with original words and all the music and then it gets released and almost immediately the Beatles bring out an album that sells in the millions while Gord’s sold in the thousands. He said it was very demoralizing but he didn’t stop. Thankfully.
