In an interview with The New Yorker, the Beatles member called rival British rock band The Rolling Stones a “blues cover band.”
SNIP
“I’m not sure I should say it, but they’re a blues cover band, that’s sort of what the Stones are,” McCartney, 79, said. “I think our net was cast a bit wider than theirs.”
SNIP
“They are rooted in the blues. When they are writing stuff, it has to do with the blues,” McCartney said at the time. “We had a little more influences … There’s a lot of differences and I love the Stones, but I’m with you. The Beatles were better.”

(The above is not a statement of fact. It is either opinion, or satire. Or both.)

There’s a lot of differences and I love the Stones
Whenever somebody says in a conversation, "I love you man, but...", you know that what's to follow is a verbal thrashing or an attack on your person or your life's choices.

I recently saw The Stones for the eighth time. This year, in fact, is the 40th anniversary of my first time seeing them. I can report that for the first time Mick Jagger seems to have lost a step, but only a step, and at 78 that ain’t bad. Just like the motto says, they are the world’s greatest rock-and-roll band, period.
It’s sad to see Paul McCartney, himself a very gifted pop-music songwriter, still going on about things decades past.

“Slams” is an editorial word to invoke ire where it need not be. Let no one who uses that word in a headline fancy himself a journalist, but an agitator

They absolutely started as a blues cover band and to be recognized as a blues band was their greatest ambition. Paul knows this and is correct, it’s not a slam even in light of their pop career. Little Steven’s Underground Garage on SXM plays a lot of early Stones, all blues cover songs.

I have been watching YouTube clips from their current American tour. Mick’s voice has held up better than Paul’s.

I saw some video of their recent tour on Youtube the other day and thought they all had lost a step. It actually bummed me out a little bit. That said, bravo to them for getting out there.

He’s not wrong, except that they are the ulimate garage band, not a cover band.

The Stones don’t apologize to anyone.
Over the years, “Gimme Shelter” has become one of my (top 3) favorite songs. I have also grown to appreciate “Let it Be”, but not quite as much.

Does neither refer to McCartney and Lennon? Cuz if it does, you’re forgetting that Harrison played with The Traveling Wilburys, who I think did a great job.

I dunno. At 79, I think he has earned that right.

He did not “slam” them. He stated that he thought they were a Blues Band I bet the Stones would agree with his assessment.

Agree with your comments about the early stones covers and Paul’s pap.
This petty infighting is distasteful.
