There is no meat shortage. Can’t even get dates to butcher animals. Need to get rid of some bulls. Packing company is paying 65 cents a pound. There is a over abundance of meat.

30+ years a few miles from here there was a couple who had a butchering setup in their basement and processed their own beef, hogs and deer. The husband was abusive and philandering. After having enough the wife killed him then chopped him up and tossed the parts off various places along the Blue Ridge Parkway. IIRC, they found his head only.

My local Kroger butcher tells me he throws away more meat than he sells some weeks. He can't budge on prices. He says it's horrible.

Apples and tasteless peaches for $2.49 a pound is ridiculous as well. They just rot too.

Lots of reasons. Over 80% of goat meat consumed in the US is imported, mostly from Australia. Many/most people in the US can't afford a frikkin $20 ribeye. Grass fed beef is getting more popular among those who can afford it and that doesn't go through the auction yards. Most of it is farm to plate or CSA sales. With prices going up across the board, many people are eating less meat and/or buying only the cheaper meats and cuts of beef. We personally won't spend more than $5-6.00/lb on any meat aside from salmon.
