Canceled or toxic? Gruden resigns over e-mails in NFL probe
Hot Air ^ | October 12, 2021 | Ed Morrisey

The writing was already on the wall for Jon Gruden and his $10 million per year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders. Last week, the Wall Street Journal exposed some of Gruden’s comments about NFL Players Association honcho DeMaurice Smith in which Gruden referred to him as as having, well …

The email was written in 2011 in an exchange between Gruden, who is white and was an analyst for ESPN at the time, and Bruce Allen, who was then the president of the Washington Football Team.

“Dumboriss Smith has lips the size of michellin tires,” Gruden wrote about Smith in the exchange.

The email was discovered during a review of workplace misconduct at the Washington Football Team that ended this summer. Yikes. Gruden tried to apologize and claimed that he meant that as a term for liar rather than a racial reference, but lip-size comments seem pretty clearly tied to Smith’s ethnicity. That alone would likely have resulted in Gruden’s termination at some point, but it turns out that Gruden had plenty more to say about others too:

Not a whole lot to say from my perspective. I was never a Gruden fan. But……that choice happened when we were allowed to make choices. If you considered someone toxic, you stayed away. You didn’t have him/her thrust on you by government edict. I am not a BLM fan. I am not an Obama fan. I am not an Eric Holder fan. It was once ok to say that. Today I’m a racist even though I’m a huge Clarence Thomas fan. I am a Herschel Walker fan. Love the men behind the family names they made proud. The skin color did not make them what they became.

"and Bruce Allen, who was then the president of the Washington Football Team."

Well, no. He was then the president of the Washington Redskins football team.

I agree with everything he said in 2011..

only thing I disagree with is what he said when he quit:”I’m sorry. I never meant to harm anyone”.

Nothing to be sorry for and never apologize.

The people who play for him make it impossible for Gruden to keep his job after this was revealed.

Why would Gruden resign? Force the Raiders to fire him and he walks away with his contract money. Anyway, everything Gruden said about Roger Goodell is 100% true, and the evidence is the fact that Gruden could no longer stay in today’s NFL.

Meanwhile, Deshaun Watson, who has almost two dozen allegations of sexual abuse against him, sits on the sidelines and collects $30 million a year for doing nothing...

The NFL should take this opportunity to do a top down review of ALL private email and social media postings and even interview anyone connected with the NFL to see if ANYONE has even used language that might be construed as racist, homophobic anti transgender, anything that’s goes against the protected classes our country now holds dear…and if ANYONE is found to be guilty, even the appearance of guilt with no proof, (It’s the seriousness of the charge… ), then that person should be removed from employment within the NFL and barred from doing business from same…forever. Hold the bastards feet to the fire, make them live by the twisted rules they’re making.

Objectively, Mr. Smith does have larger than average lips. Is it automatically racist to point out an over-sized physical attribute? Joe Namath has a fairly big nose. Is it racist against Hungarian-Americans for someone to point that out? Look-ist perhaps, but racist?

I would have fired him just because the e-mails made him look like an immature jackass.

You'd never see that kind of juvenile nonsense from Vince Lombardi, Don Shula or Tony Dungy.

It’s much ado about nothing but we live in a different time.

Trump has not crossed that line but they accuse him of the same things. He’s smarter than Gruden but he may have to pick his battles more carefully. Example-Taylor Swift. ‘Likes’ her 25% less. The advisers got to him b4 his instincts took over. Concentrate on the buttheads who ask for it and the rinos that need awakening. Raise the ‘even-handed’ eyebrows. Use laughable ridicule like the big fella did on the radio. God I miss him.

The problem came for him because while he was using his private account to SEND they were GOING to Bruce Allen’s corporate account at the Redskins. Who are being sued for hostile work environment. And the NFL is investigating. And it all came out. If you want to be a d-bag in private make sure it’s ALL in private.

And then being dumb enough to act like the first email to come out was the whole pile.

So what if he said all that the man has a right of free speech or should have. Did he assault anyone or steal anyone’s property? Did he prevent anyone from getting hired or fired anyone based on race, gender or creed?
Maybe people are offended by what he wrote in private e mails but no crime has been committed. The Woke are America’s Taliban without the rag head coverings and instead of abusing women it’s the older, white males are their punching bags.

Big mistake for wimp ash Daniel Snyder to cave on the Redskins name. It showed weakness and they further attacked the football team’s organization. These cretins need defeating not caving into.

I don’t know, I bet Lombardi sent some crazy emails. :)

Gruden has a complete right to free speech. His employer has a complete right to fire him for what he says. Nothing new or illegal in that.

I guess it’s time to review all the emails sent by all of the NFL employees, owners and executives over the past decade to weed out all of the racist, misogynistic and homophobic employees and owners in the NFL...

Let’s start with Roger Goodell’s personal correspondence and then move on to reading all of the owners emails.
