PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Two Pensacola men have waited three years for their opportunity to hunt alligators.
Monday morning, Andy Sokol and his friend Tanner caught one -- and it was much larger than they expected. The reptile measured nearly 12-feet in size.
The men got their unexpected catch after three years of applying for a tag.
Sokol said he was in shock when he saw the 12-foot gator. He says he was expecting something measuring around 8-feet
Sokol and Tanner came across the gator Monday morning in the Perdido River.
"That was our first night trying and rolled up on this guy and wasn't really sure what we hooked until we got him next to the boat," Sokol said. "I knew when we got a hook in him, we were like, 'OK he's pretty big.' But then when we saw this giant foot and this giant tail come up next to the boat we were like OK he's really big."
Sokol says for a gator of its size, it could be around 50-years-old.
"We saw his tail and we just knew we were in for a long night," Sokol said.
Sokol says it took them around two hours to get the gator out of the water. It's something they will never forget.
"Definitely a different kind of battle," Sokol said. "That was I'd say the closest thing to war I've ever felt It'll get your heart going definitely. I think the small boat definitely enhanced that feeling. But it was fun, I'll remember that forever."
The plan now is to get the gator cleaned and processed and apply for a tag again next year.
You can almost here the sighs of relief from the pythons.

What exactly is the difference (or similarity) between Cajun and Creole?
Cajuns are descendants of French Canadiens that were expelled from Canada and forcibly relocated by the British to Louisiana French Territory.
Creoles are mixed blood peoples of African, Carribbean, French, Spanish and Native American descent................
Couple of things Red
Are the cheeks as tasty on one that big as say a 5 or 6 footer?
And how many cow boy boots can that sucker make?
Course those boys are smiling Those are some happy Florida Red necks.
Also how many steaks can be made from its tail?
And who gets the Head skull.
Just too many questions.
Biggest one I’ve had in my back yard pond was probably an 8 footer but FAT. Ate hardy.
Thanks, Too kool.
Great comedy.
Thanks. What’s the differences in their food, music, customs,...?
