MINNEAPOLIS (TBEN) – Cory Kohls wasn’t even on a hunting trip when he shot a 616-pound bear in western Wisconsin.

He just spotted the bear on Friday while driving near a cornfield in New Richmond, so he asked the farmers if he could get permission to track down the bear.

“I have a 449 [pound bear] a few years ago, and I thought it was a giant bear until I got this one, ”he said. “It was amazing. It took nine guys to drag him there.

The bear population of Wisconsin is increasing and it is legal to hunt them. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources estimates that there are more than 24,000 bears in the state.

In Minnesota, the bear population is approximately 15,000.

I remember reading that the largest bear taken in Alaska was with a .22 rifle.
I carry a Marlin .45-.70.

"It took nine guys to drag him there."

Next time, leave a fresh deer carcass and some berries for desert in the bed of your truck and climb into the nearest tree. When Yogi climbs into the bed of your truck to eat... CHOOT 'UM!

Nothing like “putting” a bear.

I prefer using a nine iron.

So the bear was minding his own business when a guy comes along, snags him up and “puts” him in another state? Kinda rude, if ya ask me.

This needs to become an Olympic sport for real men. None of that wimpy putting the shot. Bear putting is where it’s at!

Having shot several black bears with handguns I can till you that it results in dead bears.

I figured that the bear was in Eastern Wisconsin and they didn’t want it there.

I’m not arguing - the article I read involved shooting them with a .22 (I think someone included a link to the article I mentioned.) Several cases were pretty hair-raising - the shooter was able either to drive the bear away or kill it, but had to shoot it. A lot, according to the story.

You are probably recalling the famous incident with Bella Twin.

It is included in this article about .22 rimfire firearms and bears.
