The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is canceling classes on Tuesday to "acknowledge and reflect on the seriousness of mental health illness" after two recent deaths on campus, officials announced Sunday. The move comes after UNC Police investigated two suicides over the weekend, WRAL-TV reported.
"We are in the middle of a mental health crisis, both on our campus and across our nation, and we are aware that college-aged students carry an increased risk of suicide," Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz wrote to students in a letter Sunday. "This crisis has directly impacted members of our community - especially with the passing of two students on campus in the past month."
The decision comes after UNC's Graduate and Professional Student Government Board had called on the school to pause instruction Monday and Tuesday so students can seek help for mental health, CBS affiliate WNCN reported.
The school said it would soon launch a campus-wide campaign to promote and support mental health awareness.
"Students are encouraged to use this time to rest and to check in with each other during that day," Guskiewicz wrote.
The National Institute of Mental Health says suicide is the second leading cause of death among people age 10 to 34. Suicide attempts among teen girls also increased since pandemic lockdowns were put into place, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Well they did lose to FSU this weekend.
I blame Megan Markle...
They’ll reflect alright. With a keg and couple of joints. Twerking all the way
There are over 30,000 students at UNC Chapel Hill.
20,000 undergrad and 10,000 grad students.
2 divided by 30,000 is .0000666
Nothing burger with emotional over reaction.
Sorry for this and I know suicides can be “contagious” but I don’t like the demand that the world come to a screeching halt in the event of tragedy. I don’t know how big the campus is but what are the chances most of the students didn’t know the deceased students? It reminds me of the push to get every student to be counseled anytime a potentially traumatic event happens. I think it is overkill. If students can’t shake it off in a few days or weeks, then make counselors available to them upon request.
I am old school, from the sixties and seventies and I can’t recall anytime the schools cancelled classes because of the death of a student or other event. Heck, we didn’t even cancel school when a bomb threat was made. They briefly had the students go outside, except for a few of us who had to search our classrooms for the bomb, which was never found. Tragedy and loss are normal parts of the human experience. In the past, we just pushed through it and I can’t recall anyone who went postal or anything. We talked with our parents or pastors and moved on.

I’ll bet you have a University degree, maybe even advanced.

Well, that would be depressing...
Hasn’t that area been a Commie stronghold for some time?
Should have waited unto basketball season.
WTF? It is a sad fact of life that some late adolescents commit suicide. When I was a junior a student shot himself on the steps of the Student Center merely because he blew his 4.0 by getting a B in a course. Now they are saying we are experiencing a mental health crisis?1 Maybe on college campuses but I don’t see anything beyond the usual craziness in society at large.
Unis have become sick Mental Institutions.
I disagree. One day to reflect on the loss of two lives and time to check up on friends to ensure hurting ones know someone cares is worth it, even if it is “just” .0000?% of the population of the campus. They don’t need to have a gathering at some stadium or memorial. But they can slow down and care for each other.
Faggots, murder suicide likely
Just skip the exams and give everyone an A in everything.
They should cancel classes in order for everyone to reflect on the downside of lack of education.
So every student has to stop their educational lives because 2 kids committed suicide. Stupid approach but seems to be the norm these days.
Dead Lives Matter
Nobody has ever asked what my GPA was in over 40 years. Sad.
“Look at the power students who kill themselves have over others!!! I want to have power over others! I want everyone else’s lives to have to stop because of ME!”
