Rodents the Size of St. Bernards Swarm an Exclusive Gated Community
WSJ ^ | 10 Oct 2021 | Silvina Frydlewsky

The lavish villas of Nordelta have for years hosted bucolic getaways for Argentina’s wealthy, protected in an enclave where industry titans and soccer stars seek escape from the torments of city life.

Yet even an exclusive gated community can’t keep out the world’s biggest rodent.

“The problem is that their population is out of control, and people are too scared to do anything. No one wants to look like they’re opposed to nature.”

Mr. Iglesias’s lakeside garden gets a daily serving of jumbo scat ...

The big rodents, which typically live in family units of as many as 40 animals, go by different names in various countries: chigüire in Venezuela, ronsoco in Peru, poncho in Panama and carpincho in Argentina. Females can give birth to half a dozen offspring a year.

They sunbathe and graze at man-made lagoons, protected from such natural predators as jaguars and caimans, the South American alligator.

Another idea: Castrate males.

Just like the idiots who think the roosters on Kauai are beautiful and need to be protected. I would shoot every damn one of them if I could.

—” a Puma in downtown Chicago who walked in from the Rockies”

His priority was a girlfriend over food.

A fun tidbit, they follow the railroad tracks, looking for love.

My wife worked for a DuPage County agency that had a biologist go out and track them down, I used to hear some fun stories.
Including the mountain lion(?) in a Bloomingdale forest preserve!! They sent a helicopter with a thermographic camera, something was there.
We have relatives living adjacent to the woods and they had been seeing something for a few nights.
Was on the local news, my wife said the images she saw were much better than the on TV.

In Florida you get these, but here in Massachusetts we get unvetted Afghan invaders.

As a participant in the 1980s war on rats, the biggest we ever captured/found was a 1 pounder. A taxidermist turned it into an excellent training display. Of course, we did hear stories of some weighing several pounds that could kick the sh!t out of alley cats

I figured they were talking about the capybara. Yep. That is what it is.

I read about them in some of the old books years ago. THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND by Jules Verne and The Swiss Family Robinson, by Johann David Wyss comes to mind. It is what these people survived on.

Remember the advertisements in the 1950s of raising Nutria for their pelts? “You can do it in your own garage!”
When that scam fell through people released these pests into the wild where they are still a problem.

Perhaps you’re not following.

That was a line from the Princess Bride, followed by another line from the movie.
