MADISON – Republican lawmakers are introducing a package of bills that would open sandhill crane hunting in Wisconsin and allow residents to carry concealed firearms without licenses.
The package of 13 draft bills, dubbed the Wisconsin Sporting Freedom Package, was released Wednesday in conjunction with Hunter Nation, a Kansas-based hunting group, which is also suing the state over the ability to hunt wolves.
The bills range in topics from adding more pheasants and brook trout, to simplifying turkey hunting seasons, to reducing Department of Natural Resources regulations.
Republican Sen. Rob Stafsholt of New Richmond, chairman of the Senate Sporting Heritage, Small Business and Rural Issues committee, said the bills are aimed at policies Gov. Tony Evers and the DNR haven't listened to from outdoorsmen and women.

“Over and over again, the DNR has made it clear that they won’t listen to rural Wisconsin citizens’ concerns, so we’re taking a stand with this legislative package," he said in a statement. "We’re telling hunters, anglers, trappers, and gun owners that we’ve got their backs and we’re defending our rights for transparency, simplified regulations, and improved access to our state’s natural resources.”
A spokeswoman for Evers did not immediately say whether he would support the proposals.
The package includes a proposal to open sandhill crane hunting in Wisconsin.
The species is currently protected. A 2011 bill to allow sandhill hunting was introduced by former Rep. Joel Kleefisch (R-Oconomowoc) but didn't make it out of committee.
No similar bill has been introduced since.
The species is hunted in several states in the Mississippi River flyway but it would take a legislation change to allow crane hunting in Wisconsin.

Why hunt cranes?
Do sandhill cranes taste like chicken?
Why would anybody want to hunt sandhill cranes?.................
“Do sandhill cranes taste like chicken?”
My neighbor say’s they taste like greasy turkey. But we are in FL so it’s illegal.
They are affectionately called “Rib~eye of the sky” for a very good reason!
That was my response.
My current guess is that it is a poison pill inserted to kill the legislation.
Many hunters are looking forward to the opportunity to turn a sandhill crane into a nice meal. Sandhill cranes are notable for tasting like pork chops or beef tips.

Apologies; my mind always tend to twist in a contrary direction. Happy hunting.
Because they are delicious.
The ribeye of the sky.
Some States have swan seasons. I think it’s partly to keep the swans from camping in fields too much. I’m guessing they hunt cranes mostly to eat them.
In some parts of WI, the cranes are getting to be too many. It’s now common to see them in yards and parking lots. Which is cool, but they can be really freaking aggressive about defending their nest, and they’re already at eye-level for some of us!
I don’t know if the damage they do to crops is a significant factor. I do see them a lot in corn fields.
One Term Tony vetoes most anything from the Republicans.
They do a lot of damage to corn fields in the spring the walk down the rows pulling up the seedlings.
Imagen 100s of them doing so they pull up a lot of corn.
Also they taste good.
I wonder why they didn’t pass them when walker was governor.
My guess he did not want to sign them.
Now I’m hungry...

In my opinion they’re the best tasting migratory bird. Geese and duck are flying liver, we’ve been hunting them here in West Texas for around 50 years. I’ll take Sandhills over any other bird including quail and turkey.
