WASHINGTON, Friday, Oct. 4.
I rode along our advanced outposts to-day, and found all quiet. The rebel pickets appeared this P.M. near Falls Church, but made no demonstrations. They were mostly laying on the grass, their horses being tied to the trees.
The New-York Thirty-seventh Regiment are busily engaged in throwing up the fortifications on Munson's Hill. They are now very formidable. It will be utterly impossible for the rebels to approach with artillery of long range enough to assail the works.
I understand that Gen. MCCLELLAN has, or will send a request, through the correspondent of the Associated Press, that all papers will abstain wholly from mentioning the Naval preparations of the Government for any expedition against the South.
This morning a soldier attached to the Garibaldi Regiment, while on picket-duty, was fired at by the rebel pickets, seven balls entering his body. He is still alive, although his recovery is doubtful.
The rebels have been engaged
during the day in artillery practice at Burke's Station, on the Orange Railroad.
GEN. WOOL AND GEN. FREMONT.
Gen. WOOL arrived in this city to-day, and I am now entirely satisfied that my statement in this morning's TIMES was correct. Gen. FREMONT has neither been superseded nor ordered to this city under arrest.
THE CHARGES AGAINST GEN. FREMONT.
The following is the result of inquiries to-day, in official quarters: The charges preferred by Col. FRANK P. BLAIR against Major-Gen. FREMONT, on the 26th of September, have not yet reached Washington. According to the revised Army Regulations, charges are required to be transmitted through the superior officer, which in this case is Gen. FREMONT himself.
