Plenty to go wrong in heat of moment

Like forgetting to pump

Especially if raised on 1100 or Super X or auto five browning slash Remington

The ammo does the work, the gun is a tool for making the ammo work. The first thing you settle on is what ammo will do the job for you, and then you find a gun that works well with the ammo you need.

Particularly with a shotgun it’s important to make sure it reliably feeds the size(s) of shell you intend to use. Nothing wrong with pump.

20 gauge is suitable. Heck .410 will work. Then there’s the reduced velocity shells.

More is not necessarily better, and less might bring that 2nd shot on target a bit faster. Perhaps working on quick 1st shot placement has merit.

I’m not sure I have that level of coordination (to work a pump that fast.) I have a Remington 870 Wingmaster too, and, I dunno. I think I’d have to practice with thousands of rounds to hit even 1/2 the firing rate of a semi-skilled auto user. It sounds like you are essentially saying pump and re-aim in the same motion, and I’ve never been able to make that work. But, again, you’ve probably outshot me by a factor of 1000! ;-)

I do tend to agree about field reliability — there’s just more that can go wrong with an auto, but... this gun isn’t going into the field.

Probably, I should see if I can try out an auto at a range...

“The pump makes “that noise”...”

Law enforcement rely on that racking noise as a warning for the sake of legaliy, but it’s not necessary.

I view approaching a threat “unracked” as the stuff of hollywood. Martial arts wisdom of the ages is that “weapons should be felt and not heard”... first strike capabilities are especially effective if delivered quickly.

I also recommend #4 at .24 caliber as more than adequate and places a few more balls downrange.

No birdshot in the house.. SLUGS, MAN!.. SLUGS!!!

If you miss and those over-penetrate, you've got a real problem if you hit your neighbors.

I do have an AR-15. More worried about it penetrating walls, tho’, than picking off a bad guy standing beside wifey..

You're more likely to over-penetrate with 00 buck or slugs than a smaller grain 223 round.

Haha - I knew a guy who rigged up his distributed sound system so he could play the “rack” sound in any room in the house, “left” or “right”, one room or more. Plus a couple spoken commands, I believe. Controlled from his cell phone, IIRC, or maybe it was a tablet. Talk about spooking an intruder...

The same can me said of semi autos. Forget to disengage safety? Gun jam? Forget to release bolt lock? You shoot the way you train. If you’re not willing to have a basic understanding of your weapon and how it works perhaps you would be better off with a single shot? Or maybe a revolver. You’re right, any number of things could go wrong. But making sure you know what you’re doing should be the first thing you try.

Stick to guitars, Josh. .223 is smaller than 00 buck. But it has a lot more velocity and therefore energy behind it than the buckshot does. And rifle rounds are optimized for ballistic efficiency. They’re pointed in the front and have boat-tail bases. They are also usually copper jacketed as well. 00 buckshot isn’t. If you see overpenetration it’s going to be the rifle round.

Not gonna use slugs or even 00 buckshot inside. At close range, #4 buckshot is going to be plenty devastating.

I prefer 12 ga 3 in mags in #2 shot. Ive got an Ithaca double 26 in barrels with auto ejectors and double triggers. The auto safety disconnected. I carry two shells reversed in my left hand. We used to hunt like that. I fire two, break it, reload and fire two more before you can get four down range from a pump. Also got a model 37 Deerslayer with extended mag that is very slick. Get you a 30” X 30” piece of plywood. From about ten paces fire a magnum 00 at it. From the same distance fire a magnum #2 at it. Examine it.
00 is ok for deer and humans at close range. Slugs will penetrate a car. A load of #2 is going to shred a human.

I used to have 00 buck in the chamber. Until I learned that pump shotguns are drop sensitive to firing. (IDK - but numerous folks have said that. They aren’t like most pistols.)

So now I keep it standing by the side of my desk without a round in the chamber. BUT - I also would rack it in as soon as I pick it up. And quietly.

And PLEASE use buck shot and not bird shot. Bird shot is for birds. There was a shooting at my son’s college years ago. Luckily the guy used bird shot. He did kill one student with the barrel at the back of the neck.

He shot a girl from about 10 feet away. She stopped, dazed, and walked away. Shot in the chest and arm.

And no - a shotgun doesn’t cover the entire room. Maybe a few inches at 15’ in a room with 00 buck.

(I have some slugs and buck in a strap on the butt of my gun for reloads).

There’s an old guy at the gun club that shoots skeet with an 870 pump. Guy is amazingly fast with it. I’ve seen him miss 1 or 2 though. :)

I like the pump for home defense. I have seen what the sound of cocking it can do. It is louder and more authoritative than racking a pistol. I was awakened by a car door opening next door.(people screaming at each other don’t wake me up. Someone gently trying the door wakes me up) and then footfalls. My neighbor has a pump shotgun. I head it being cocked and then as I got to my front door(armed) a car door being slammed and wheels scratching off. Neighbor said later that I had, indeed, heard what I heard.

2” sounds like a good compromise.

But if 6 shots or so doesn’t do the trick, then out comes the primary handgun (.357 semi), and wifey can grab the 38 Special revolver — if I remembered to take out the snake shot from that one, anyway... /s
Or she can reload the shotgun...

Really, while stopping power is a big consideration, I’d think most intruders faced with maybe 3 very loud, quick blasts, are gonna reconsider what they’re up against if they’re not already down.
