THE GREAT REBELLION: GREAT EXTENT OF THE REBEL LINES; Their Forces Estimated at 125,000; IMPORTANT NEWS FROM MISSOURI; A GREAT BATTLE EXPECTED SOON (10/2/1861)

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, Oct. 1.

We have the usual quiet along the lines to-day our troops occupying undisputed the line to which they advanced on Saturday last. Our scouts have discovered rebels at Occoquan, Fairfax and Springfield. They appear to have all gone from the neighborhood of Chain Bridge. It is generally believed, now, that their retrograde movement on Saturday has no significance, as they evidently had so few men in front of our lines that their withdrawal does not in any way change the relations of their main body to our front.

I think reliable information has been obtained that the rebel force between Aquia Creek and Leesburgh, is above one hundred thousand -- probably nearer one hundred and twenty-five thousand, than any other figures. This force is scattered along some sixty miles. It is also pretty certain that there is some considerable alarm among the men from the extreme Southern States caused by the threatened naval expeditions. The Governor of South Carolina has demanded the return of the regiments from that State, and some have gone.

A gentleman has come to Washington direct from Richmond, via Norfolk, where he was sent with a flag of truce. He has been held in custody by the rebels at Richmond for about two months, although he was a civilian, and had no connection with our Army operations. It is the opinion of this gentleman that the rebels have two hundred and fifty thousand men in Virginia, and that the force is being rapidly augmented. He says it was one continual stream of troops passing through Richmond for the seat of war. He saw the Howell Cobb Regiment of Cavalry pass through Richmond, and he thinks he never saw a more perfectly equipped and better appearing regiment.
