Weekly Garden Thread - October 2-8, 2021
October 2, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 10/02/2021 5:44:15 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

The Weatherman is calling this week, 'Unsettled.' After one of the driest growing seasons I can remember, we get rain NOW? Yeesh! Yes, I know. Count my Blessings; it will all too soon be SNOW!

We had tons of rain 2 out of 3 nights last week. My tomatoes did fine somehow.

However, tonite is supposed to get into the mid 40s so I picked all my Tom’s that are begging to ripen and put them iny sunny window sill.

The rest...we shall see how they handle the cooler night time temps.

I did a big harvest today. I filled two mesh bags that previously held 10lbs of onions....I filled them with fresh bell and poblano peppers.

I filled a mesh bag that previously held 5lbs of lemons.....filled that bag to the brim with jalepenos. I am going to pickle them tomorrow.

I am off work the tomorrow and the next day
I am goingvto reorganize my greenhouse house shelves ( remove half the shelves to make room for potted peppers and eggplants that still have young fruit on them.)

Two days ago I ripped out my cucumber plants and planted seeds for greens.

‘Tis the season! I made three jars of refrigerator pickled peppers this morning. I have a basket of red and a basket of green bells to deal with yet, but that’s just chopping and freezing. Maybe a batch of Pepper Sauce (like Pasta Sauce) if I get motivated.

I’m pretty burned out at this point in time. I’ll post pictures of my canned goods one of these days!

It’s often wild turkeys that are the poachers

I don’t have ‘Hobbits.’ I’m developing a robust post-Apocalyptic skilled dwarf tribe.

October is Kill Poison Ivy Month

I did salty vinegar last year. This year, I will try very salty water with a little vinegar.

When finished, I then go after 2 or 3 Norway maples

Let’s get with the program, people ...

Good one. We can combine forces in the future. I’ll definitely need Minions. ;)

Thank you for the informational piece on getting rid of bindweed. I’ve been dealing with it for years ineffectively, as it keeps coming back and spreading, too. Her advice makes sense.

Since my screen name is taken in honor of Edmund Burke, even though he was born in Dublin I have to list Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire as that is where he lived and was buried.

When planting garlic, is it necessary to let the cloves sit for a couple days after breaking them apart?

I have read that you should, and yet other sites say nothing about it.

I just picked a huge bunch for pesto. Have harvested 7 times now off the same patch.

I’ve used mine here and there through the summer. I’m NUTS for that Lemony Kale Pesto, now. I like it much better than the Basil variety.

And, I always have Kale. On years when I don’t even PLANT Kale, I seem to have Kale, LOL!

THIS is why I can't have nice things! Weber has managed to get out of the barn yard for two days running, now. I THINK I know where the breach is in the fencing, but it's not something I can fix myself. Beau is on his way home from Bear Camp, thank goodness! Weber just milled around The Manse for a few hours, grazing in the rain, and then let me lure him back to the barn with a bucket of oats. He is now chewing his cud and relaxing in his 'room' with puppy Fremont sleeping nearby. A halter would've been an easy solution, but for some reason it didn't get done by Management. I'm strictly Farm Labor. *SMIRK* NEVER a dull moment!

If my separated garlic cloves sat for a day, it was just due to circumstance, not because they HAD to. :)
