David Lee Roth: ‘I’m throwing in the shoes. I’m retiring’

“I’ve got a band that is doing what Al and I used to call a ‘block,’ that means 75 rehearsals for one show,” Roth said. “We are bringing it in classic VH style. Alex and I are the only version, that was his message. There is no other variation. There is no torch being passed. There is no other side to this coin. This is classic, in-your-face Van Halen.”
“I’ve given you all I’ve got to give. It’s been an amazing, great run, no regrets, nothing to say about anybody. I’ll miss you all. Stay frosty.”

I had no idea he was even still alive. Last time I saw him was when I took a co-worker to see Poison back in ‘89. DLR was the opening act. Drunk, cussing at audience, slurring/forgetting words... finally got booed off the stage.

I was never a fan, but looking at those pictures now, I’m thinking, “Dang…that guy was an athlete.”

Never forgot those jumps, flips and crazy high kicks.
Makes my back hurt just to think about it.

The hottest front man who ever lived, Eric Bloom, is still On Tour Forever with BOC, in his seventies.

If this guy is your version of the 'hottest front man', just, WOW.
Even for a lizard, he doesn't look too 'hot'.

Van Halen was the soundtrack to my youth. Happy Trails and Bon Voyage, Dave. It was both “Magic and Love”.

Poster is talking about Blue Oyster Cult, who I’m guessing are on the state fair circuit at this point.

He did keep himself in shape back in the day. I last saw the band at the US Festival in 1983 - that was probably Van Halen just at or past their peak. David Lee was a drunken mess during that show but still put on a performance. I think he had just come up from hiking in some South American jungle to do that show - which at the time set a record for the highest paid single performance for a rock band (a million dollars I think).
He lived the rock and roll lifestyle to the fullest and it was starting to catch up to him in the mid 1980s. But during the late 1970s, Van Halen was the best rock show on earth.
