How does this happen?

Posted on 10/01/2021 5:14:27 PM PDT by Kevin in California

So last week I go into the local liquor store to pick up a 6pk of beer and a snack. The clerk rings me up to a charge of $10.36. As I've done many, many times before, I present my BofA Visa debit card into the reader (and yes, I'm 1,000,000 % positive I presented my debit card) and it doesn't prompt me for my pin like its always done. I take the card out to try again and at that point, the clerk tells me I'm good to. I then tell the the clerk I never provided my pin so how can it go through? He says it went through. Now I'm puzzled and walk out of the store with a quizzical look.

So fast forward three days later when I'm working and decide to do my monthly expense report as it's that time of the month. I have an AMEX corporate purchasing card. I proceed to pull of my charges an lol and behold, that charge from the liquor store that should have been against my BofA debit card was charged to my AMEX card. I'm like, how in the hell did that happen when I never removed my AMEX card from my wallet as it's buried deep inside it.

Anyone know how this could have happened? Of course, I disputed the charge to my AMEX card.

You made a mistake and put it on your Amex card. It happens.

If you didn’t use your Amex card by mistake, the NFC reader may have read your Amex card because your wallet gitbtoo close to it.

Could be RFID reader. It’s possible your Amex card is RFID compliant and your BofA isn’t. If the reader was RFID, it may have picked up whatever was closest. That would be my guess if it wasn’t a simple mistake of having chosen the wrong card while on autopilot.

Did you hold your wallet anywhere near to the card scanner? Even just for a second as you pulled the other card out?

Nope, like I said in my OP, I’m 1,000,000% positive I never pulled my AMEX card from my wallet.

I’m not Joe Biden as I still have my faculties.

Shouldn’t have drank that first 6 pack before making a beer run for more.

Buy bigger.

24/30 packs will save you a ton of money.

That last sentence is serious and true.

What are you doing buying booze on credit anyway? That’s the first step in any country sung, where you lose your wife, your job, your house, your truck, and only have the dog.

No mystery: Your card was ran as credit, no pin required.

Check with your bank and they will verify.

I may have but I’ve had my wallet close to the reader many other times and this has never happened before.

Easy. You screwed up and used wrong card. Mistakes happen. Not fun for you to sort it out at work. Good luck.
