Highway to Nowhere: Pelosi Delays Vote Amid Dem Chaos

With internal tensions near a breaking point, House Democrats backed down from a promised Thursday vote to advance a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill after it became clear it was going to crash and burn.

Hours before, at a press conference on Thursday morning, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) publicly expressed confidence that the legislation would succeed. “So far, so good for today,” she said. And supporters of the legislation echoed her, repeatedly projecting victory by the end of the day.

But it turned out the more prescient assessment came from Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD). When asked if he felt confident Democrats had enough support to pass the bill, he replied: “Nope.”

Despite a marathon day of negotiating and backchanneling, Pelosi never called the vote. In a letter to members sent at nine o’clock at night, the Speaker deemed it a “day of progress” and said that “discussions continue.” A subsequent notice from Hoyer’s office said the House would “complete consideration” of the bill on Friday.

The outcome is a victory for progressives, whose promises to block the infrastructure bill forced Pelosi to delay the vote. While they’d like to see that legislation pass, dozens of members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus held it up due to a lack of progress on the other plank of Democrats’ agenda - a much broader social policy package that contains many of their long-desired goals, like expanding Medicaid benefits and tackling climate change.

Not only is that legislation - dubbed the Build Back Better Act - not ready, centrists like Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) have balked at the $3.5 trillion price tag, the finer points of tax raises and health-care policy and, sometimes, the rationale behind the legislation altogether.

Maybe Pelosi should just rip it in half.

Maybe Pelosi should just rip it in half.

I'd like to see her rip that bill in half one page at a time. It would take her quite some time.

In 2018, a progressive wave swept into Congress. They are surrounded by a celebrity bubble that tells them they are not only right, but in the majority. They now have sympathetic Democrats in charge of the House, the Senate and the presidency.

They decided to go for broke. The result?

The For the People Act died in the Senate.

The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act died in the Senate.

Amnesty died in the Senate.

Corporate tax increases died in the Senate.

The Equality Act died in the Senate.

Filibuster reform died in the Senate.

The Green New Deal died in the Senate.

Reconciliation died in the Senate.

Now the progressives will kill the bipartisan infrastructure plan, which included some of what they wanted, because it is not enough. They will take no wins unless they can have all the wins. Zealots always prefer to live in hell if they can’t get Heaven exactly as they want it. h/t Erick Erickson

Could we maybe get lucky enough that one of her rabid communists would rip her in half? Got to keep hope alive after all.

Don’t be deceived by the Kabuki. Lucy Manchin will vote for the infrastructure Bill and there will be reconciliation. He will pull back the football like he always does. The Rockefeller klan are putting pressure on him, and he will cave. The media is trying to give conservatives false hope, but don’t fall for it. Get ready for the ‘ride down the rabbit hole’.

Exactly, the progressives are going to move from 5 trillion to 3.5 trillion and meet Manchin and Sinema at 1.5 Trillion. It was preordained kabuki theater, a head fake. IT'S STILL 1.5 TRILLION TOO MUCH!!

“Get ready for the ‘ride down the rabbit hole’.”

We have no say. Elections don’t matter, not sure they ever did. Manchin is holding out for a big payout, just in case they can’t fix his election and he actually gets booted.

If the political class and their donors want it, it will be done.

So here’s the big question I have:

How long will they—democrats—keep this up until they get their way?

I remember how the got the 60 in the Senate in 2010 (by refusing to seat Scott Brown, who won the Tedward Kennedy seat in Mass in a TEA Party wave) until their Christmas vote to approve Obamacare.

Dirty, sneaky bastages!

At what point will they give a rest?

Never?

Will we have this constant angst until the next Congress in January of 2023?

From 3.5T to 1.5T to 1.2T to 1T.
I see a pattern.

Very astute. As Willie said, “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages”. The election of 2016 never ended. Hillary was the chosen one, and the usurper Trump ‘stole the election’ from the Clinton machine (Deep State). Now, Clinton tried to kill Trump in 2020, and managed to put a puppet in office until they can complete the ‘murder’ of 2020. But Trump is like the ‘terminator’, and will not die until his mission is accomplished. He is like a contender, who went down for a 7 count 3 times, and then got off of the canvas and decked the champion. If he wins in 2024, the Washington machine dies, because he truly understands now. So they will continue fighting him at all cost, and realize if he does win, they are finished. And when Hillary goes down, she will take the Washington Establishment with her, because she not only knows where the bodies are buried, she buried them. IMHO.

I’m less concerned about the original bill, than I am about the add-on bill.

Agreed.

They both suck, but $3.5 Trillion sucks so much harder.
