But one innocuous sign near Bakersfield has long inspired curiosity, befuddlement and hundreds of online dispatches from travelers passing. The sign, just outside the oil derrick town of Lost Hills, reads “Tom McCleod slept here” in an austere sans-serif font. It raises the question asked again and again by drivers: Who is Tom McCleod?
...After days of failed phone calls and redirected emails, the fourth Tom McLeod, a Vietnam War veteran who now works as the curator at the Museum of the Pacific in Texarkana, Texas, got back to me. This Tom is closely linked to Pacific Wrecks, a group that seeks to identify and otherwise valorize soldiers who were missing-in-action or prisoners of war. And “Tom McCleod slept here” signs are in Texas and Arkansas, too, he says. Louisiana and Mississippi, as well.
But he has no idea who the guy is.
“It’s a big puzzle for us also,” he said in an email. “Apparently someone has more money than brains.”

Shouldn’t Josh be more concerned about people crapping on the sidewalks in SF?
The real question: Who cares?
I prefer the many farmers’ signs ripping the Rats for the decades of water shortages. Some anti-Boxer signs are still standing.
Tom McLeod crapped here?
Kilroy was here.

Who is John Galt?
—”Shouldn’t Josh be more concerned about people crapping on the sidewalks in SF?”
If you lived in that neck of the woods, would you be blabbing about the local shite problems?
This is as important a question as when Joe Biden asked, “Where am I here?”
The writer apparently skipped doing the first thing I would have done. Identify and contact the owner of the land on which the sign sits and ask how it got there, and who put it up. If someone stuck a sign on my property without permission I’d take it right down.
Didn’t McLeod have a TV show?
—”Kilroy was here.”
And that would be a tasteful addition to the sign.
Perhaps, a Wall Drug sticker too?
I think if Kilroy looked around today he would say “f it, I’m outta here “.
The mystery possibly solved.
Or maybe not. Hard to believe if the guy lived long ago why anybody would remember him enough now to put up a sign.
The wrong answers are more interesting, though:
In the near future, a zombie apocalypse will threaten humanity. Tom McLeod will rise out of the shadows to lead the fight against the zombies. He will reunite the remaining tribes of California survivors in an epic fight for humanity.

Exactly.
The owner put it up or allowed it to be put up.
There are a lot of great signs off the freeways in the Central Valley. You’d think it wasn’t commiefornia.
apparently he slept around...
wonder who the disgruntled woman is...
