An Illinois man died this month in the state's first human case of rabies since 1954, according to health officials on Tuesday.
The Lake County man, in his 80s, awoke in mid-August to find a bat on his neck...
The bat was captured and tested positive for rabies, but when health officials told the man he needed to start post-exposure rabies treatment, he declined, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) said...
He subsequently died and a bat colony was found in his home.

LOL
He listened to all the anti vax nonsense out there and paid the price.
I had a colony in my attic. It was over one of the rentals and the renter would hyperventilate every time there was a bat flying around in his apt. I live in Northern Indiana. They would slip down between the tiles of the drop ceiling.
Some times I was able to shoo the bat out of the house with all the windows and doors open. Sometimes I would net the bat with my bug net. Finally, I hired a great repairman to put in a real drywall ceiling. They were getting in from the outside in a torn part of a screen. No more bats for me. This was about 5 years ago.
I did not realize you were in the Philippines—that changes the calculus.
Thank you for being there for these people.
He might have refused.
If he was competent, that was his right.
If he wasn’t competent, the family could have gone to court.
Five shots, IIRC, one near the site, four in the arm over a couple of weeks.
Unpleasant, but nearly as bad as it used to be.
Bats crawl into my woodshed every winter, which is hard to prevent since it’s open to the air on all sides. I’ve been startled a few times grabbing a load of wood. South Puget Sound.
Dang! What a horrible way to go.
Was In health center once and a woman calmly walked In and said she had been attacked by a fox. She was all bit up. The desk person said ‘where is the fox now?’ (Concerned about others running into it too)
The woman said ‘we killed it’ (her husband fought the dang thing too) then went on to explain, how they finally had to strangle it when they couldn’t shake it off. Her husband came In A few minutes later, he was bit too, and had the fox in the car to be tested.
When my grandson got bit a few years ago he got at least a dozen shots near the bite site that evening and then about once a week for the next several weeks.
I’m vaccinated against rabies but not COVID ,LOL
Describes democrats.
How’d you get vaccinated against rabies?
I was bitten by a dog this past winter. The owner and her dog took off down the street. My son called animal control and gave them a description of the dog but they looked for 10 days and never found it. No one replied to our Neighborhood page request to just come forward and provide us with proof of rabbi shots. Next morning the ER Doctor tried to talk me out of getting the rabbi shots. He said odds were the dog was vaccinated. I wasn’t willing to take the chance of getting a disease that was 100% fatal. Had the shots and Medicare covered the whole thing. The bill would have been over $20,000
“.. an absolutely awful way to die...”
it is. There are youtube videos of old films showing people with rabies. One film (and it is awful) shows a little boy with it. The older films are in black and white... but as a viewer... I would get treatment very quickly.
‘An Illinois man died this month in the state’s first human case of rabies since 1954...’
caused because he has a cousin, who worked with a guy, who dated a girl from a neighboring state, who had a brother who married a woman who get the jab...
Yeah. Seems almost too weird to be real. Bats typically stay far away from humans. The Vampire Bat does drink blood but they’re native to South America.
How did the thing end up in Illinois?
Nasty yes. But it makes GREAT fertilizer!
Don’t be ridiculous. We only need 2 weeks to flatten the curve.
I had the first rabies shot back in 2001…..not bad.
The dog was then put down and tested negative…..I was lucky.
.
Seems to me I remember, back when I was very young, hearing that you got a lot of shots in your stomach and they were excruciating.
Wonder if the elderly gentleman was remembering that and didn’t understand it was no longer the case.
