Gabby Petito’s life didn’t have to end as it did: We’re sending young women messages about their life choices that too often lead to tragic outcomes

I write this feeling awkward and a bit old. Like millions across the country, I found myself gripped by 22-year-old Gabby Petito’s tragic homicide in Wyoming. She could have been my daughter Then, it struck me that this isn’t the usual somewhat embarrassing “rubbernecking” over true crime, and in this case involving a beautiful young woman. Instead, it reflects a broader societal problem.

What grabbed me most is the video of her encounter with her boyfriend , Brian Laundrie, and the Moab, Utah police. The couple had been having an extended and public “lovers’ quarrel” that was so bad it led to police involvement. She is sitting in her vehicle and crying uncontrollably about how they have been “fighting all morning.” But oddly, witnesses report that she was the aggressor toward Brian. in the video, the police officer notes that he has scratches on his face and is bleeding.

She was then the victim of a homicide soon afterward. Why? What happened? Brian is in hiding and sure looks guilty.

The couple claimed to be engaged, but there was no wedding date. Also, before Gabby went on a long cross-country trip alone with Brian, she lived with him at his parents’ home in Florida. Nothing was ever formalized nor did they act like a young couple stepping into the world of full adult maturity.

So, what struck me—and I know I come across like a 1950s dad—is that so much of this could have been avoided if young women like Gabby did not fully give themselves emotionally and sexually to young men like Brian, with no commitment.

I put no words in your mouth. You’re the one who blamed mothers and womens’ lib in a long screed at post 16. I called you on it, and now you’re whining rather than either defend your assertion on factual grounds or agree that fathers also have responsibiilities. Boo hoo hoo.

“No one missed your initial post or the 27th time you posted it.(”

And you know whether someone missed my post or not how? Are you clairvoyant?

Funny how when I post it again (nowhere near 27 times, lol, unless you can’t count) I get positive feedback from Freepers who comment how my post was interesting and/or insightful to them. Not all Freepers are on FR 24/7, and for the few times I think one of my posts may be of general interest (which this one has been) I repeat it on a pertinent thread.

I stop at the point I think the topic has died down in pings. Funny how Freepers post thread after thread after thread about the Gabby/Brian topic and that doesn’t seem to bother you as you are on one. If you don’t want to read it, then skip my comment and go onto the next rather than ragging about its repetitiveness. Or start ragging about the plethora of FR thread postings on this very same subject. Guess it must be of interest to even you or you wouldn’t have gotten on this thread, one of many.

I’ve been on FR for 23 years, and have made thousands of comments, a miniscule amount that I think are of sufficient interest that they bear repeating. In this case, the topic of paranoid schizophrenia is novel enough and may not be as widely known about that I felt it an interesting enough point of view along with facts to repeat it and from the feedback I’ve gotten regarding my Comment, I was right.

So now I recommend you butt out on policing threads for chuckles.

“Results may vary, family to family. But I stand by my assertion that both parents are responsible for training both their boys and their girls in what to expect as their bodies change and how to prepare for safe and responsible dating, marriage and family life.”

Exactly right.

Females have more "freedom" now then they ever had. They give the "milk" for free yet you blame males for taking advantage of that? (Both are wrong BTW)

Newsflash, those mothers in the 1950's were raising the first whores of the sexual revolution, riddle me that please.

“Did mothers do that in the 50’s? I’m under the impression those type of conversations did not take place. It was just expected. Perhaps there were restrictions to keep a daughters life style in check. But, not sure there were talks about this sort of thing.”

Families took their kids to Church back then where they got a lot of their moral teachings. And society as a whole was conservative in their views of morality in general. Now families are bombarded by amoral media that pollutes the minds of children with a variety of garbage on social topics that making it difficult to stop the constant onslaught on youth. It’s a dilemma.

I understand that morals were taught in church and society was much more upright. However , I was responding to this
“ Back in the 50s the mothers would instruct their daughters to the recognition of men out to use them for sexual pleasure and give nothing in return”

I just can’t picture that type of discussion being the norm in the 50’s.

They rejected Church teachings because their parents were obsessed about chasing materialism and status quo/social status.
Went to Church on Sundays, but Monday through Friday was a cutthroat zeal towards becoming more comfortable, leisurely, and improving your social status. Cynicism grew among the offspring because of the materialistic chase. Offspring then became hypocritical cynics because they enjoyed the fruits of their parent's labor but believed they were more aware and "educated" when they went off to higher "education".

Problem is the parents worked their butts off and laid the ground work (The imagination and ingenuity of Medical Doctors back in the 1950's 1960's 1970's for instance) laid to groundwork for the comforts we have today. Was it worth it? Society is regressing now. Stinks, but it's are current situation.

I think the moral message back then was conveyed in a more oblique sense by parents, in particular by the mother.

Stay away from that part of town, or from that social gathering, or those people are riff raff and you don’t associate with them. You can’t wear that, it’s too revealing and good girls don’t dress like that. You can’t watch or go to that movie. Change the TV channel. Inappropriate viewing. The whole neighborhood is watching you, so even if I’m not watching your behavior, everyone else’s moms are and they will tell me if you misbehave.

You can’t hang around with that crowd. Be home by curfew or else. You can only go to parties that are chaperoned. You can only stay overnight at a friend’s home if the parents are home. You can only listen to decent music or go to decent shows. You don’t want to get a bad reputation, do you? Your dad is going to be home soon from work, and wait till he hears what you did. You’re going to be in for it. You do that again and you are going to get a spanking, or when older sent to your room, or have privileges taken away.

There were many ways we were taught moral messages in the old days. And there was no mass media messaging to contend with. I continue to maintain that the constant media onslaught is one of the major dangers for youth today, and I don’t know the cure or how to turn off the spigot.

That is why so many of the older generation yearn for the days when life was more innocent and decent, and who can blame us? Cities weren’t burning and rioting. Children weren’t foul mouthed activists, schools didn’t indoctrinate, the seamier side of life wasn’t as attractive to those looking for excitement, politicians weren’t as polarized. The boring 50’s are looking pretty good right now in contrast.

The pendulum ever swings. Hopefully, somehow and soon, the pendulum starts swinging back to moral sanity, and good triumphs. We must fight for it. Otherwise we may all have to move to Poland or Hungary, countries that are still morally based, family oriented, willing to arrest the bad guys and keep them in jail, and are protecting their borders to maintain the homogeneity of their countries’ cultures. This last one is a toughy as Biden is letting anyone from anywhere into our Country through are open southern border. There goes homogeneity of cultural beliefs down the tubes.

Going to Church and being a Capitalist are not mutually exclusive. Being more comfortable, leisurely, and improving social status through merit rather than being born into it have been the hallmarks of our Country from its inception. You can be wealthy and do and care about your fellow man. It’s called philanthropy. Be careful here as you are verging on the Dem/socialists’ party line of envy towards those that have more than you do. It’s not a good look.

My family was pretty strict. We immigrated from Spain. There were no discussions. Only expectations and reprimands after the fact.

Both appeared to be the co-dependent type.....but toxic relationships end badly. This one sounds like the violence was a two way street so it definitely had no good end.

“My family was pretty strict”

Bingo. They verbalized their expectations to you and showed by example. And if you didn’t measure up, you heard about it. Work’s like a charm.

""What has led her and millions of other young women down the road to this kind of life? The answer, in large part, is that the modern feminist movement has sold a couple of huge lies to young women. The first is that sex lacks an emotional component, so it will leave no mark."

And studies back this up; it does leave a mark. The studies show that slooting it up leads to the inability to pair bond and have healthy lasting relationships. The same studies show that the more a woman sleeps around her chances of divorce skyrocket.
