Finally something useful from the European Commission!!!! And it is not bent bananas or nabob potato rules!
The main holdout is Apple, which said it was concerned the new rules would limit innovation, and that would end up hurting consumers. iPhones come with the company’s own Lightning charging port, though the newest models come with cables that can be plugged into a USB-C socket.
The push by the EU will certainly be cheered by the millions of people who have rummaged through a drawer full of cables for the right charger. But the EU also wants to cut down on the 11,000 metric tons of electronic waste thrown out every year by Europeans.

We should use SI units, and one plug.
Converter for voltage differences...
—”There is some overlap”
Yes, but when you find one with the correct output; wrong jack, and or wrong polarity.
And if the stars align for a correct match... the crap wire from the wall wart has an intermittent open.
But if you hold it just so it will make contact!!!
PS:Wave a nice neodymium magnet over your cable/wall wart collection; some will wiggle!!!
BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT COPPER!!!
Chinese crap iron wire electric cables. Low bidder.
Many of the copper cables are of the smallest gauge possible and quickly corrode into nonconductors.
And that is a fact, even if understated.
See USB history...
LOL, don’t we all?
—”green energy rooftop solar”
Not as bad as USB and the MC4 is widely used it is not alone...And they need to be weatherproof.
Small roof leaks are always difficult to locate...this I know!
—”Would Technology advance if everything was always the same..”
A good point.
IMO most of the USB BS of proprietary cables is from profiting on accessories and notice some change cable format like others change their socks. Yes, APPLE.
IMO only the USB reversible was worth the effort.
All without gov intervention also gone serial RS232, monster SCSI, monster IDE, an infinite number of video connectors...
But there remains some big love for many varieties of cables and wall worts...
No, but eventually one wins out...
Anyone remember ‘tape’ recorders?
Floppy disks?
“Get rid of them all. You will need one of the ones you chucked”
Murphy’s law sort of.
And Murphy was an optimist
Pure self-control!
I am jealous.
But perhaps you are not showing the video/data/power collections?
That said, I often am putting some ancient odd things together and like my ‘stuff’ within reach.
—”Wireless power “
I was an early adopter.
My kids wear out the cell phone jacks in a year or so.
Newer ones are difficult to replace and you become tired of holding them ‘just so’ to charge.
—”We should use SI units, and one plug.”
Over the years I have become bitter about this topic...
My heart says, jam it down the manufactures throats with massive penalties...
My brain says maybe not so fast...
Because the US/euro is not the only market and the market will decide.
Asia already has a weird(CHEAP) USB that ties two lines together as a workaround for some voltage sensing functions
Works for them, but corrupts the supply chain.
Gresham’s law in action.
Try finding the protocol for the devices you use?
The serial number can make a difference.
I have an older USP tester but the newer ones $$$ and will they can tell a data cable from a charging? Proper voltage sensing lines? Only to be used a few times.
and changing all too often.
Wow! Well organized! All of our cords are in a jumble in a box. :)
—” SCSI history”
SCSI was my thing for too long.
I once ordered an extra long SCSI cable from U-bid...
A MASSIVE box arrived!!!
They sent about 50 pounds of them! Maybe 1,000?
I called and they said to keep them!!!
I used two and scraped the rest.
So… were they 50 pin, 68 pin, 72 pin, Lvd, 80 pin, Mac 25-50 pin, Mac Laptop mini connector? I hope they included terminators.
Neatness is the product of a sick mind.
And
The true artist sees order in chaos.
This reminds me of the gun control BS -- it's not about guns, it's about control. This not about saving the Earth, or anything other than that the EU wants complete obedience, control, and one-size-fits-all uniformity. I wonder what'll happen to products like Sandisk's Dual Drives -- flash drives that have both USB-A and USB-C (or Lightning) connectors? You don't need that --- we'll tell you what you need!
In this video, I explain why Apple pushed USB-C as the main port of choice for so many years on their MacBooks, even though it put Apple through a lot of pain.
I then explain why USB-C needed to be mainstream for Apple to bring on their latest Apple Silicon Macs, including future Macs like the M2 MacBook Air.
And finally, I explain why Apple is only now bringing those old ports back to the M1X MacBook Pros! Why Apple is REVIVING Ports & MagSafe on the M1X MBPs! | July 16, 2021 | Max Tech

Good lord. Could you household spare you for a few days to get my stuff organized? /s
